Age question

I've been practicing at home since november 2011 and had a brief period of training in an actual gym for a month in january. I plan to return to it in september after I'm done with my tests and my toe heals up but question is, is there a point for doing this at at the age of 18? I'm about to turn 18 august the 20th.

That depends on you. What are you in it for? What are your goals? Amateur? Professional?

There have been pro's that have started training later.

To be honest though, if you're questioning if there's a point, your heart isn't in it. Rather than asking if there's a point, it would just be something you had/wanted to do, regardless of age.

I know I sound like the kind of guy who just wants to get into boxing to get medals, score bitches, snort cocaine off of hookers' asses and win all the street fights he could get into but it's not like that. Thing is, I'm kind of on the crossroads here. I love boxing. When I watch all the fights from the old days, I see the past champions I am so amazed by it, I have this beautiful feeling I think to myself "I want to be that" and feel so motivated, like I could accomplish everything - nothing makes me feel this way. But on the other hand I don't know if I'm just not too old for that. So you're saying the point is always there?

As to my goals, I'm not sure myself. As I've said, my dream is to be pro but I don't know if I'm capable of that. I guess I'll just return to the gym, give it my best and see how it goes.

You can be a successful professional if that is your goal. Are the guys who have trained their whole life going to have an easier time of it? Absolutely. That doesn't mean you can't make it happen.

There are late-coming successful professionals in just about every sport. College walk ons playing in the NFL for example. Basketball players transitioning to football in their 20's.

You are easily capable of becoming professional if that's what you REALLY want. And I mean really want. Sometimes people think they want something before they know what it takes. Set goals for yourself. Talk to your trainer and ask him if it's feasible that you could compete in amateur competition after a year of training. You'd be 19. 4 years of amateur work and you're a pro at 23-24 with a decent amateur background. Will you be the youngest champion ever? Of course not, but you might be champion one day, if you want it.
