equipment questions

could you please help me with figuring out what type and size of bags to go with? i already have a stand and now i'm looking at different speed bags and heavy bags but dont know what to go with. i've seen where some places actually say what weight theyre recommended for. well i'm 140 pounds and 5' 7" so if you could suggest what size speed bag and what weight heavy bag i'd appreciate it. or where i can find that info would be great. also i looked at a heavy bag that was the nevertear type that was some type of a vinyl that had more of a soft shell then a leather bag. could you tell me what advantages that bag has over a traditional bag or would you recommend the traditional bag for me? i'm not even sure what gloves to go with and all the details. i was like the new everlast gel gloves that u were under your gloves in place of hand raps. basically, if your could give me any and all advice as far as equipment goes to mess around in my house i'd appreciate it. thank you, jeff

Jeff, welcome to the boards!

Usuallya beginner would start off with a slightly larger speed bag, somewhere around the 10 X 7 size. Once you learn on that, moving to a smaller bag is recommended. As far as the heavy bag goes, Id find a nice 100lb bag with a durable material such as leather or vinyl. The canvas bags are "ok" but they wear down your gloves quicker, and seem to harden and wear much quicker as well. Leather will be the most durable material, then vinyl, then canvas.

Which ever you decide to use, make sure your hands are wrapped properly under the gloves before you start punching! I personally have not used the evergel wraps, but I have examined them up close, and this is what I think about them. They seem to offer pretty good protection over the knuckles and top of the hand, but very little wrist support. I would stick with the traditional wraps as long as you have the time and patience to use them.

At my gym we all use the same bags, and they are 140lb. If its heavier, it wont move around quite as much. Its better to have a heavier bag, than one thats too light.

At my gym there are to heavy bags you can use they are both 140 just one is taller than the other. The heavyer the better because it builds up your punching power with time and practice. Remeber with your jab and right straight/left straight or you will brake your wrist. Good luck!!!

They would be good for aerobic training, and shadowboxing, to help strengthen your shoulders. But I wouldnt recommend using them on the bags.
