Jeff, welcome to the boards!
Usuallya beginner would start off with a slightly larger speed bag, somewhere around the 10 X 7 size. Once you learn on that, moving to a smaller bag is recommended. As far as the heavy bag goes, Id find a nice 100lb bag with a durable material such as leather or vinyl. The canvas bags are "ok" but they wear down your gloves quicker, and seem to harden and wear much quicker as well. Leather will be the most durable material, then vinyl, then canvas.
Which ever you decide to use, make sure your hands are wrapped properly under the gloves before you start punching! I personally have not used the evergel wraps, but I have examined them up close, and this is what I think about them. They seem to offer pretty good protection over the knuckles and top of the hand, but very little wrist support. I would stick with the traditional wraps as long as you have the time and patience to use them.
