Week 16: Jose Luis Castillo vs. Joel Casamayor

Welcome to the sixteenth week of the fight scoring. For those who don't know what it's about, it's simple... Each week we pick one close/disputed decision and we all score the fight. You don't have to participate and you can join in at any week you feel like it. The fight i have chosen is one that is talked about very little, which was a FOTY candidate in 2004. Joel Casamayor takes on Jose Luis Castillo, in what is a very controversial decision, with ridiculously wide scorecards. See how you score it

It would be great if you could give a ROUND by ROUND score (you don't have to though!) so for example:

Round 1: 10-9 Fighter A
Round 2: 9-10 Fighter B

You have until next Monday to get your scorecard in before we move onto the next fight. Enjoy this great fight.

Joel Casamayor 115-113 Jose Luis Castillo

It was a very good fight, Castillo pressed the fight and Casamayor boxed very well. There were alot of close rounds where it was hard to pick between Castillo's pressure/workrate, and Casamayor's movement/clean punches. I had it to Casamayor, by 2 rounds, the 117-111/116-112 judge scorecards were absolutely shocking.

Just rewatched the fight had Casamayor by 3 or 4, he won quite easily. I don't know if it was bad strategy by JLC or Joel is stronger than I thought he was but it was suprising to me how easily he tied him up early.

Round 1: 9 - 10 Casamayor
Casa controls the round using his jab and putting combinations together from a distance. Castillo never able to get inside.

Round 2: 9 - 10 Casamayor
Castillo does a better job of cutting the ring off and getting inside on Casa this round, but Casa ties him up pretty easily when he does, so little inside work gets done. Casa still wins the round from the outside.

*Round 3: 9 - 10 Casamayor
Castillo's aggressiveness was far more effective this round. Casa's offensive reduced, as he tied up Castillo more often then he tried to hit the guy. The effective punching took place on the outside however, where Casa was in control.

*Round 4: 10 - 9 Castillo
Casamayor's primary offensive weapon this round was holding. Castillo applied all the pressure and threw the majority of the punches. Casa's percentage might have been higher, but overall he landed a good bit less, especially in the hard punching department.

*Round 5: 9 - 10 Casamayor
Casamayor out boxed Castillo from the outside for the first 2 minutes of the round, while Castillo closed the gap and began to rough Casa up on the inside in the last minute. Holding when Castillo applies heavy pressure is becoming a trend in this fight for Casa.

*Round 6: 10 - 9 Castillo
Casamayor wins the first half of the round, while the second half is Castillo's. Casa establishes distance and puts together good combinations in the first half of the round, but Castillo's keeps up the pressure and breaks through Casa's defenses in the second half. Castillo lands a very hard combination to the body, and lands a couple good right hands to the head down the stretch. Castillo's winning half was more impressive.

*Round 7: 9 - 10 Casamayor
Casa peppers Castillo from the outside at various spots in this round. Castillo however is still applying heavy pressure and wins the battle when they tangle inside. The eye catching blows were nearly all landed by Casa, so I gave him the round.

*Round 8: 9 - 10 Casamayor
Casa put this round in the bag early. Castillo came on strong in the second half but Casa didn't let him steal it.

Round 9: 9 - 10 Casamayor
First round since the 2nd where I thought Casamayor indisputably won. He landed a good 10 clean shots to the head that snapped Castillo's head back.

*Round 10: 10 - 9 Castillo
Close grueling round with toe-to-toe action, edge Castillo for landing the more powerful blows and being more active.

*Round 11: 10 - 9 Castillo
Casa got his offense off effectively from the outside, while when the gap was closed Castillo as usual had the upper hand. The body shots Castillo was landing appeared to be hurting Casa, who progressed from clinching to flat out holding on for mercy this round.

Round 12: 10 - 9 Castillo
Casa fought pretty bravely in the second half considering how exhausted he was, but this was a clear Castillo round. Casa got beat up for the first time in the fight.

Final Score: 5 - 7 Casamayor (113-115)

Score Variances:
Scoring all the starred rounds to fighter 1: 9 - 3 Castillo
Scoring all the starred rounds even: 1 - 8 - 3 Casamayor
Scoring all the starred rounds to fighter 2: 1 - 11 Casamayor

My score:

Rd 1 10-9 Casa
Rd 2 10-9 Casa
Rd 3 10-9 Casa
Rd 4 10-9 Castillo
Rd 5 10-9 Casa
Rd 6 10-9 Castillo
Rd 7 10-9 Casa
Rd 8 10-9 Castillo
Rd 9 10-9 Casa
Rd 10 10-9 Castillo
Rd 11 10-9 Castillo
Rd 12 10-9 Castillo

Total 114-114

I scored it a draw but I gave most of the closest rounds to Castillo. I cant believe the 116-112 and 117-111 scores for Castillo.

I contemplated the 8th round the longest. Had I given it to Castillo, my card would have also been a draw.
