Floyd Mayweather to fight in May and September 2013

Current two-weight world champion and pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. is lining up two ‘gigantic’ fights in the coming year after participating in just one outing through a troubled 2012.

Boxing’s biggest star made a successful foray up to the 154lb division against Miguel Cotto in May, but then reported to Clark County Jail for a two-month stint in a contrasting year that will soon be behind him.

Advisor Leonard Ellerbe has confided in Dan Rafael of ESPN.com that Mayweather has announced that he wants to fight twice in 2013 as he looks to extend his perfect 43-0 record and rubberstamp his place at the pinnacle of the sport.

"Floyd has told us that he is fighting twice in 2013 with the first date being May 4 - Cinco De Mayweather, and the second date being Sept. 14," Ellerbe told Rafael.

"Mayweather Promotions is looking forward to these two gigantic Floyd Mayweather events in 2013, and we are in ongoing discussions with our promotional partner, Richard Schaefer (chief executive of Golden Boy Promotions) in finalizing the opponent and other aspects of the upcoming promotion.

"He told me and Al (Haymon) this is what he is doing," Ellerbe added.”

With a name like ‘Cinco de Mayweather’ - you could only assume that WBC 154lb champion Saul Alvarez or current mandatory welterweight challenger Robert Guerrero would be the likely opponents with their Mexican and Golden Boy connections.

The opponent selected would also then clear up which of the two title belts Floyd decides to keep as he currently holds the WBC 147lb version and the WBA light-middleweight championship, into the bargain.

"That is still to be determined," Ellerbe stated. "He is just looking to come back in two gigantic fights in 2013 and continue to show why he is the best in boxing.

"Floyd Mayweather has a plethora of options. Who doesn't want to fight Floyd 'Money' Mayweather and make the most money they ever made in their career? You hit the lottery once you've become a Floyd Mayweather opponent."

So it seems that Canelo or The Ghost will get the opportunity, I'd rather see the fight with Canelo, it would be much entertaining IMO.

I'd like to see the fight with Canelo...I got $50 riding on Floyd with my dad on that fight. He's gambling on Floyd's decline to speed up more than it already has.

A Guerro fight would make sense among boxing fans, but it's not really marketable to the average Joe. If Marquez beats Pacquiao this weekend, he might land himself a Mayweather rematch and that would be highly marketable.

Last fight wasn't even competitive. I don't think JMM is even on the radar.

They can play the "new and rejuvinated" approach and a convincing win over Pac would thrust Marquez into the spotlight, especially as in many people's minds, it'd be the third or fourth time Marquez beat Pac.

I really dont understand why MArquez is agreeing to fight PAc again. There are so many good fights out there for him. That fight is a joke. Broner vs Marquez would be a good fight, Zab Judah wanted to fight him, He could fight anyone at 140 why not Danny Garcia? There are so many options I don't understand why he is going to fight Pac again for the fourth time. What does he expect to be different this time? I really don't get it there is no vindication to be had.

To stay on topic, I'm not convinced Canelo is going to the opponent on May 5th for Mayweather.

He took it because he is getting paid huge money for it. I believe for the 4th fight to happen, he demanded $10 million, and I guess Arum and Pac took him up on it.

Guerrero can sell and Golden boy has been looking into that...

With all the background with his wife's cancer, Guerrero will be a marketable opponent

$$$ MONEY $$$ dumbshit. He made more money fighting pacquiao than he made in all his other fights combined. He has a family to feed and he's about to retire, doesn't have many more fights to make his last dollars from fighting.

Mayweather-Canelo, May 4th...money wise and marketability wise it makes sense. But he's going to lose bad if he takes this fight right now, the kid is still too easy to hit. You need more than speed and power to beat Floyd.
