NO, this is not a recent news update! This is a speculation on, more or less, the future of both fighters' careers.
Never? Or never say never? F.M. Jr. announced his retirement early this year. In its reltive sense, he is retiring at the top of his career, a move that few have the oppurtunity to do, like Jay-Z [lol]. But the second side to this move is unavoidable; ask any Puerto Rican why F.M. Jr. is hanging up his gloves and they will tell you one word, "Cotto."
The pressure to succeed in today's welterweight boxing division... is a Puerto Rican. In one word, pressure, an element that all of his opponents have come to summarize their experience with him for. Constant pressure within the ring, but, for F.M. Jr. it has always come from outside of it. With or without retirement, people will talk of it.
And in every applicable dialogue only one question arises each time: Will it ever happen?
Mayweather is retired. He isnt ducking anyone, he doesnt have a belt, he doenst claim to be champion or p4p king. The only thing he claims is to be retired.
I sincerely hope he means it too I've had more than enough personally of his prima donna ways

Everyone knows in their right mind that Cotto would crush anyone you put in from of him right now, regardless if it is Mayweather Jr. And ironically, the "right mind" has mostly to do with it; Cotto is a very smart welterweight boxer, if not one of the smartest. Real-time strategy, premeditated combinations, placement and landing, these are a few of the factors that go into the pressure he provides.
In turn, Mayweather isn't stupid enough to not acknowledge this. Retiring was unavoidably connected, I am betting, to his own decision making having Cotto in mind. And this is where it gets a little tricky. I say 2 years because that is the only way it could possibly happen, given a few points of understanding:
1. Cotto would crush Mayweather right now (Just look at the Zab Judah tape in slow-mo).
2. Retirement is imminent if Mayweather does not want to be crushed (ie: Leonard Hagler).
3. If, in fact, Cotto is the major reason for retirement, Mayweather will work on plans to comeback.
4. Cotto will definately still be there when he does.
This is just merely facts and implication, but, with this basis, it is impossible to deny that maybe there is a chance for Mayweather to 'not get crushed' against Cotto come 2010. Considering a definite but gradual slow-down of his speed, a few more bangs to the cranium in a couple more prize-fights, Cotto might provide a possible, yet very narrow, chance for vindication for Mayweather.
Floyd smashes Cotto. I'll bet anyone all of their points on the fight when it comes off next year. I'll even be nice when teling you "I told you so" afterwards.
He got 8,000,001 to fight Baldomir. That's something his haters cannot dispute. I predict you'll duck this just like everything else that shuts you down.
