Bert Sugar stated it on ESPN when he was rating his top 10 Heavyweights. He was asked how come he still rates Rocky so high and he said, because of his record, BUT he fought in a very weak era.

Like it has been stated many times, Louis was past his prime before he fought Marciano. His record was 61-1 with 52 KO's in his 1st 62 bouts. In his last 9 bouts before he fought Rocky, Louis was 8-1 with only 3 KO's. So he was far from "Top Notch" when he fought Rocky.

Rocky fought LaStarza twice (1950 & 1953) and he was very good. Most people thought LaStarza beat Rocky in their 1st bout. Rocky would stop him in the return bout.

He also fought Walcott (1952 & 1953) and Charles (both in 1954) twice each.

Charles had 90 bouts at that time and he had seen better days. Charles had 2 defeats the year before he fought Rocky, one to Nino Valdes and the other to Harold Johnson.

In his 1st bout with Rocky, Charles fought very well, and it was a lot closer then a lot of people thought it would be and people wanted to see a return go. Rocky stopped Charles in the return bout after having his nose almost cut off. That did show what Rocky was made of.

In the 1st Walcott bout going into the 13th round, the judges had Jersey Joe ahead 7-4, 7-5 and 8-4. Rocky stopped Jersey Joe in the return bout in 1 round. Joe's record in his last 17 bouts before he fought Rocky was 10-7 with 5 KO's. In his defends he did loss to some of the best, Louis twice, Charles twice (beating him twice too), Rex Layne, Joey Maxim (who he beat in a return go) and Elmer Ray (who he also beat in a return match).

Vingo was a good prospect, BUT he just turned 20 two days before his bout with Rocky and he never fought a bout that was scheduled for more then 6 rounds before facing Rocky. Just a year and a half before his bout with Rocky, he lost to Joe Lindsay who had only 3 bouts at the time.

Like you stated, Who's to say what Vingo and LaStarza would have been - minus the Rock! I honestly feel that they would have done much much better, BUT we will never know will we.

I seriously doubt that, not while that creep remains Administrator. In any case, as long as he's here why would I want to? I have a legitimate beef with this jerk: He was insulting and condcending toward me and I take that from NO one, I don't care who he is. This isn't the first time either. I checked back at all his responses to my post and they've ALL been snide and insulting. It's too bad duelling's gone out of style because I'd LOVE to have him for pistols at ten paces. Like I said NO one treats me like that. NO one. I won't put up with it and I won't take it in silence. Where do people like him come from anyway? Were they born a**holes or did they just work real hard to get that way? Like I said in a previous post with his attitude it's no wonder hardly anyone posts here anymore. That's why I post on Boxing Banter and Ringside Report where I'm actually liked and respected as opposed to treated like common trash by the likes of Tommygunn.
