No, a good referee issues warnings, point deductions, or disqualification based on the severity of the transgression. Everyone knows the rules. The reason for the Ref even being there is to enforce the rules so as to protect
both fighters.
Should Mike Tyson have gotten a mere warning for biting Holyfield's ear off? If all Miranda had gotten for a head butt like that was a warning, then a whole different group of people would be screaming about incompetent or corrupt refereeing. And you know what? They would be right to do it.
As for the assertion that stopping the fight would have led to a Miranda win, that is bogus on the face of it. If the fight had been stopped because of an
accidental head butt, this would be true. Because the ref had already cited and deducted points, we know it would not have been called as accidental. It would have been a disqualification. DQ's don't go to the cards, ever. Why do I even need to explain that?
The bottom line is that the ref's taking points from Miranda was a very middling response. To have issued a warning would have been flaccid under the circumstances, but to have issued a DQ would have been extreme. IMO, if you think a warning should have been issued under those circumstances, you are either so biased against Abraham you can't see past your own nose, or have no concept of the rules and safety in the ring. 'Nuff said.
