Floyd Mayweather- 39-0 (25KOs)
Floyd Mayweather Jnr., nicknamed 'The Pretty Boy', is regarded as the undisputed Pound4Pound best fighter on the planet today. He has won 6 belts in 5 different weight classes (Super-Featherweight, Lightweight, Light-Welterweight, Welterweight and Light-Middleweight) and has amassed a proffesional record of 39 fights undefeated. Floyd Mayweather is currently the WBC Welterweight champion of the world, and has been named Ring Fighter of the Year 2007 (he also won it in 1998).
Floyd Mayweather had a tremendous amateur record, he had 90 official bouts which resulted in 84 wins. He won national golden gloves at 106lbs, 112lbs and 125lbs. Mayweather's amatuer career climaxed at the Atlanta 1996 olympics. Floyd got to the semi-finals of the tournament before losing a controversial decision to the Silver Medalist. He still claimed Bronze medal at Featherweight, but the US team officially protested.
Mayweather began his professional career in October 1996 at Super-Featherweight. In his pro debut he won via TKO2. After a string of impressive wins Floyd was granted a title shot at the WBC belt. In just his 18th pro fight, Mayweather beat Gennaro Hernandez after he retired in his corner after the 8th round. He defeated Augustus, Manfredy and Chavez at 130, but his main win at the weight was Diego Corrales. Corrales was undefeated in 33 pro fights, with a very high KO%. Mayweather won all the first 9 rounds, scoring 3 KDs on the way, before Corrales's corner threw in the towel after the 5th knockdown.
Floyd Mayweather stepped upto the Lightweight limit, 135lbs, in April 2002 when he fought Jose Luis Castillo. Castillo was #1 at the weight and WBC Lightweight champion, Floyd won an UD. This was disputed and some felt Castillo did enough to win the fight, apparently Mayweather damaged his shoulder and broke his hand early in the fight. The rematch happened 8 months later, where Mayweather fought a much more cautious fight and scored a clear UD. Mayweather went onto defend his title 2 more times at the weight, Sosa UD12 and N'Dou TKO7.
Mayweather fought for a very brief time at Light-Weltwerweight, 140lbs. He only fought 3 fights, mainly because the main guys in the division were unable to fight Floyd at the time. He knocked Corley down twice on his way to a wide UD, then TKO'd Bruselles in the 8 the round. In June 2005 he fought Arturo Gatti in Atlantic City, with a very Pro-Gatti crowd Mayweather won all 6 rounds with a knock down on the way, before Gatti's corner pulled him out.
In late 2005 Mayweather had a tune-up at Welterweight, 147lbs, against Sharmba Mitchell. He won via TKO6. In 2006, Mayweather won a UD over both Zab Judah and Carlos Baldomir. He won IBF title against Zab, but vacated it and went after Carlos Baldomir for the WBC version.
In May 2007, the "Superfight" happened. Floyd Mayweather stepped upto Light-Middleweight, 154lbs, to take on 'The Golden Boy' of boxing Oscar De La Hoya. In a highly anticipated bout between two top fighter, Floyd Mayweather won a clear decision. Two of the judges scored the fight for Mayweather, and another scored it for DLH. This fight did 2.4million buys across the US, this broke the record set by Lewis-Tyson, and was the highest grossing event ever in boxing history. Floyd said he was retiring after this bout.
In December 2007, Floyd Mayweather came back out of retirement after this fight. He fought British Light-Welterweight supremo Ricky Hatton, the 140lbs champion. In another highly anticipated bout, Mayweather was comfortable and was leading the fight by 88-82, 88-82 and 89-81 before TKO'in Hatton in the 10th round. He knocked him down with an excellent counter left hook, and Hatton was in no state to continue.
Following his win over Ricky Hatton, Mayweather announced that he would be taking 'a long break' from boxing. However, this break will only last until September, where he is expected to fight Oscar De La Hoya in a rematch of their fight in May 2007.
