Dat Nguyen Interview - 5/26/08
What made you want to become a boxer?
Growing up I did Kenpo Karate and Kickboxing but there wasn’t much competitions so I stayed busy doing Boxing and High School Wrestling. I stayed with boxing because it has the most future in professional sport.
Many feel you are still an undefeated fighter, even with your one SD loss, Does a fighter take pride in being undefeated?
Absolutely, everyone want to see an undefeated fighter because of all the hypes but I look at not being undefeated as a tough lesson that will take me to the next level with a new outlook and dedications.
If you could fight anyone in the world right now, who would it be?
As a fighter, I would like to fight the best and the best everyone is considering is Pacman.
If you could see any fight in the world as a fan, who would it include?
What everyone is looking forward to is Mayweather vs Cotto.
When is your next fight?
June 25th in New York City on Broadway Boxing Show.
In your opinion, who do you think would win between Jorge Linares and Chris John?
I don’t care at this point… I know they’re both title holders but when it’s my turn to fight for a world title then I will look at their styles and observe how they fight.
What are your thoughts on the Cuban Sensation, Yuriokis Gamboa?
I saw a few of his fights and he’s certainly talented but he has a few flaws. He has got good people moving him. He could be a star if he stays undefeated. Stars are good for the sport because they will generate more money in my divisions.
How close do you think you are in your career to stepping up and fighting for a title?
I’m confident that I’ve the skills to be up among the top fighter. All it takes now is the dedications, hard-work and disciplines. I would like to shoot for a title before my 20th pro fights.
Who were your boxing idols growing up?
I like Oscar De La Hoya and Roberto Duran and Tyson in his prime.
What are your thoughts on the upcoming matches between antonio margarito vs miguel cotto, manny pacquiao vs david diaz, and kelly pavlik vs gary lockett?
Margarito and Cotta are interesting because of their styles but I think Cotto will win if he don’t get knockout. Pacman is too quick for Diaz so I pick Pacman. Pavlik is tough for anyone to beat because of his style and work ethic. Pavlik by KO.
Now lets play a little game, I’m going to say a word or phrase and you are going to tell me the first thing that comes to mind.
Favorite food (Pho -Vietnamese noodle soup) I’ve never lost when I eat Pho before a fight.
Favorite music – (Rock)
Favorite movie- (The Matrix)
Favorite brand of glove (Reyes -Puncher Gloves)
All time favorite fight (Gatti vs Ward)
Dat Nguyen (Be all you can be)
Prince Naseem Hamed (Old News)
Floyd Mayweather Jr. (Talented and still hungry)
Those are very creative questions. Thanks for the interview my friend!
