The Official Boxing Forum Interview with Jack Loew - 6/2/08
Jack Loew Interview - 6/2/08
What made you want to become a trainer in the first place?
I have always loved to work with kids and I have always loved the sport of boxing.
Do you have any type of boxing background?
I fought amateur for around 4 years, I won the novice and open 160 local goldengloves, probably around 25 fights.
What were your first impressions of Kelly when you first saw him in your gym?
My first impression of Kelly was that he had alot of heart and balls for a skinny kid.
Could he always punch?
I really didn't notice his punching power until the age of 16. Thats when it really started to show up.
Out of Arthur Abraham, Edison Miranda or Joe Calzaghe. Who would you like to see Kelly face in the recent future?
Personally, I would like to see Kelly face either Abraham or Calzaghe. We've already knocked out Miranda.
Is the trash talk between you and enzo calzaghe full of actual animosity or do you think that you may both be playing it up to sell a fight which many in america view as a foregone conclusion?
If everyone remembers it was Lockett and Calzaghe that started talking **** all I was doing was responding.
Does this make Calzaghe an even bigger target for you guys to go after?
Not at the moment, The only fight on my mind right now is Lockett.
What did you think about Calzaghe vs Bhop?
Calzaghe didn't impress me at all.
Do you think Kelly could defeat the likes of Hopkins and Winky?
Kelly knocks them both out.
I know you can't speak for Kelly himself, but would you say that his knockout of Jermain Taylor was his most satisfying moment of his career?
Anytime you knock a guy like Taylor out, who had never been knocked out, it's a very special night.
Have your thoughts of Jermain Taylor changed since before the 1st fight and after the 2nd?
I think Jermain is a very fine athlete and I always have.
How is training camp going for Kelly's fight against Lockett? Is he having trouble making 160 or is everything going smoothly?
Training camp is great, and making 160 will be fine, we were 162 last week.
Now that we are on that subject, How much longer do you think Kelly will remain at 160? He's huge for a middleweight. Many feel he could become a 3 divison champ.
As long as Kelly wants to make 160, he will. When he's ready to move up, then we will.
Do you feel there is any aspect of Kelly's game that still needs worked out. Many fans would say his defense would need improved, however this makes him one of the most exciting fighters right now. Are you guys working on that?
We are always working on things to improve, including defense.
Some of our members at boxingforum.com have money on pavlik to win June 7th, most likely by stoppage. If you were a betting man, would you bet on Pavlik to defeat Lockett by stoppage?
Theres definently a great possibility of an early night for Lockett.
How long do you think it'll last?
I think as soon as we start to back him up and control the pace it could end.
Not to long ago, Edison Miranda sent David Banks through the ropes and his supposably next opponent, jean pascal, was ringside and was scared shitless to the point he turned down the fight. It is rumored that Joe Calzaghe will be ringside for Kelly's defense against Lockett. Will Kelly be trying to send the same message to Joe that Miranda sent to Pascal?
Kelly is going to send a message to all middle and super middles that night.
If Floyd Mayweather Jr. risked his life and career and challenged Kelly Pavlik. How do you think that would play out?
Mayweather is much to small for Kelly.
Any other promising fighter's in your gym that we should be looking for in the future?
My main focus is Pavlik.
What are your thoughts on Roy Jones Jr, a former middleweight champ, going up and winning a piece of the heavyweight title, and is it something that has ever crossed pavliks mind?
I respect what he did and Kelly has told me before everything is over that he wants to try Heavyweight.
I'm going to list some names now, I'd like to know how you think Kelly would fare against them.
John Duddy
Mikkel Kessler
Felix Sturm
He would knock them all out.
Thanks again Jack. It's been a pleasure talking with you and we all wish you and Kelly the best of luck come June 7th.
Thank you.

lol that is not surprising at all. I bet he doesn't give two craps about anyone else in that gym right now when his bread and butter is Kelly.
I like Jack. He has a lot of confidence in Kelly and is straight to the point. He doesn't just blow alot of smoke, I think he truely believes Kelly will stop anyone 175 and down if they were to fight him.
