Jorge Linares, born August 22nd 1985 in Venuzuela, in a professional boxer and current WBC Featherweight title holder. Linares has a prestigious amateur career, amassing a record of 89-5 and winning major competitions from the age of 14.
Linares turned professional in December 2002, with a 1st round KO victory against journeyman challenger Kyong-Soo Chung. Most of his early fights took place in Tokyo, Japan where he built up an impressive undefeated record with alot of wins coming by KO. In his 23rd pro fight, he beat Ramiro Lara by 3rd round TKO. This enhanced his record to 23-0 (14KOs)
His first big fight came in July 2007, against former world champion and world-class competitor Oscar Larios. It was originally an eliminator for the WBC Featherweight title, however In-Jin Chi vacated his belt which meant the fight was for the WBC strap. In a largely one-sided bout, Linares took apart Larios over the early-middle rounds before stopping him in the 10th via TKO. The first defence of his title came against Gamaliel Diaz over 12 rounds in December 2007. In another one-sided bout, Linares took apart Diaz and won via 8th round KO.
Jorge Linares has been dubbed 'The new Golden Boy' by Oscar De La Hoya and GBP. He is considered by many as a future P4P king. It is not known what his next step will be, however a unification fight against Chris John or a fight against the winner of Vazquez-Marquez III has been mentioned.
