Hey, I know some have said not to lift weights for boxing in general, some say otherwise. I'm about to pick up boxing as a way to stay in top physical condition and for self-defense, and because I think I will enjoy it.
Current plan: Tuesdays and Thursdays at the boxing gym, MWF I'm thinking of doing the Westside FSB strength program.
Is that looking okay? I want to put on some muscle, I'm 6'2" and about 165 pounds right now. I'd like to get up to 175 or 180 at some point, not soon obviously. Suggestions?
Absolutely lift weights. Might want to stagger the days some more. Give yourself a day off inbetween somewhere and shift something to the weekend.
I don't know anything about this 'Westside FSB strength program' but if it's a strength program in the vein of what a strength program should be, you won't gain so much weight in muscle so to speak. You'll make your muscles stronger certainly. You also won't get too much hypertrophy if that's also something you're looking for.
If you see any immediate spikes in your weight, just understand that a portion of weight gained will be water retention/some fat. But you said yourself you're in no rush.
I don't see a problem with anything. Just keep a good diet ontop of it all and do some solid cardio sessions and you're gold.
Whoa whoa whoa. No don't do that. You have to treat your whole body as one big muscle alright? Don't ignore any of it or you can really screw yourself up, or just look awkward as hell.
Some dude at my Gym thought his pecs were all that mattered. Now he has boobs that'll poke you in the eye and the rest of him is the body of a 10 year old boy.
I will use this topic to take a doubt.
I train like hell once i wana win everything will be in front of me in some time, and because i love Boxing, the problem is, i am urrently losing some excessevely weight and can't "upgrade" my strenght. I will fight at -69kgs, and if i continue like this, i must go to -64, thing i don't want to. If i eat more carbs, they go to fat, if i eat less carbs, i lose weight.
I am thinking about alternating strenght training (5x5) with hypertrophy training (something like 3x8) to counter the loss of weight. What do you think?
Welcome to you on this forum, this forum really provide you the good information regarding the bodybuilding and strength training. Here you can every type of the information related to health.
Thread starter, I would definitely encourage you to lift weights. Never mind all that crap about it being "bad for a boxer", its nothing more than an old school myth. I would suggest limiting your routine to two days so you can recover alot faster. Below is an example
Day 1
Squat-5x5
Bench-5x5
Bent Over Rows-5x5
Day 2
Deadlift-5x5
Shoulder Press-5x5
Pull ups-3x8(add weight if necessary)
Make sure you also work your conditioning as well. Also don't become too obsessed with weight room numbers. Weight training is only to supplement your boxing, not replace it. Most of your training should be reality based.
I guess for that you should ask this all from a personal trainer he can tell you exactly what is making sense i mean what workout you should do and what is the diet which is correct for u.
