I don't give much attention to the whole carb/protein ratio philosophy or whatever. I do know that what I used to eat before working out worked for me. My workouts were extremely rigurous.
Get some plain oatmean and nuke it with water. Add some cinnamon and honey for taste. Add a half scoop or so of whey protein as well as some chia seeds. And boom, you have super food. I know there are probably a bunch of guys out there who might disagree, but their sissy ass workout of lifting weights and running a couple of miles doesn't exactly cut it for me.
The guys who told you that are probably skinny guys who are on a high carb protein that is supposed to be a mass gainer and probably drink it with milk, lol.
In my opinion fruits are best food to eat before workout. Fruits have vitamins that provide energy to the body so it is good to eat fruits daily before doing any workout. Fruit juice is also beneficial.
