Noob question?

I want to take up boxing and so I bought my self some 12 oz. gloves. My nephew took boxing for a couple of years and I asked him whats the best way to build up hand speed as well as punching power, he said to shadow box and spar with the heaviest gloves you can get. I was wondering if that works or is there something better?

Ive been training for 8-9 months now but Ive done plenty of homework all around on boxing. What your nephew said works. But to build hand speed get a small elastic tube, you can find them at sports authority in the fitness section, when you shadow box hold on to each end of the tube and shadow box as you normaly would just with the elastic tube. To build power use the heaviest gloves you can and get the heaviest heavybag you can, then punch that about 20 minuets a day, over time your power will increase. Good luck!

This elastic tube, is there a certain brand I should get and how much do they cost?

Well, I got one that was shorter than my arms out stretched like wings, and it has handles. I don't know how much they cost I got it for my birth day. I'm assuming they only cost $5-$15. P.S. If you get one be careful they fight back. One time I lost my grip on the handle and it came flying back and hit me in the nose..... Those things HURT!!!!!!!!!!!! It gave me freakin bloody nose, and my nose swelled right up but don't let this story scare you out of getting one.
