Here is my roundup of 3 Cleto Reyes gloves- the training gloves in 16oz, the horsehair fight gloves in 10oz, and the new Safe-Tec fight gloves also in 10oz. They were purchased from seller mexicanfightgear on Ebay: mexicanfightgear | eBay
Before I start the review I want to give mexicanfightgear some props, the guy is a legend. 99% of the time when you message him on Ebay he replies within 5-10 minutes!! His customer service is top notch. My orders arrived in Australia within 8 days from the US which deserves a special mention. I wouldn't buy Reyes from anyone else, this guy is the best in the business, no joke.
On a side note, my second order from him even had a baby tarantula in the box from the Reyes factory. It was f&^%ing badass. My cat ate it though, because she is an even bigger badass. I was hoping my punches with killing machine spiders on them would get me a few more in the "W' column, but maybe next time. ;-)
All 3 cost around $100 US and were purchased from mexicanfightgear on Ebay. You can email him [email protected]
tell him Denno sent you, he'll hook you up ;-)
First up, the training gloves in 16oz (black).
perfect for sparring, the knuckle padding is soft enough for both you and your training partners. The padding on the triple cuff is also nice and cushy, and is great for absorbing shots with your guard in sparring. The even distribution of padding between knuckle and wrist makes the glove perfectly balanced.
after a 2-3 week break in period, these are the most comfortable gloves I've ever worn, they feel like they are custom made just for me. They don't get too hot, and the weight at 16oz feels perfect for sparring.
Like all Reyes, the craftmanship is exquisite. They look and feel fantastic, they're like works of art to me. Very impressive.
I'm not sure if I would use thse much for bag work, the padding feels more designed for sparring, and the extra padding along the cuff is a waste if you aren't using it (as you wouldnt on the bag really). The flat profile lends itself to sparring, makes your punches land nice and even with some pop and the knuckle padding does a good job of dissipating the impact. Check the punch profile in the pics below.
Next up, the horsehair fight gloves in 10oz (red)
Not a great deal. When people talk about Reyes being punchers gloves, these are the gloves they are talking about. They are kind of pillowy, as if they are stuffed with cotton balls, but you will feel every punch you throw. They are fantastic on the mitts and DE bag for this very reason, and will improve your accuracy and technique as a result. Don't even think about using them for sparring though..........
They are super snug, and ultra comfortable. They breathe incredibly well and feel light as feathers on your hands. They are broken in before you even use them, you can open up your palm fully from the moment you put them on. Without much padding on the wrist they feel a little "front heavy" but on a 10oz glove it's not that noticeable. Rounder profile than the training glove, but the soft padding negates this so they still pack a punch.
These are really only for people who like to mimic the speed and flow of combos on the mitts and DE before fights. They are definately not for sparring and definately not for heavy bag use either, you'll wear them out in a matter of weeks with heavy use. For mitt work though, they are my favourite gloves to wear. Fantastic!
Again, top notch. Beautiful leather and aesthetics. Very classy.
Last (but not least), the new Safe-Tec fight gloves in 10oz (black).
Wonferful! I was really looking forward to these, and I wasn't disappointed, they live up to the hype! At 10oz the padding feels tremendous, and is ultra protective on your knuckles. I was very skeptical that they could be used for mitts, bag AND sparring but after using them for all three I've come to the conlusion that you can safely use them for all 3. Yes, that's right- a 10oz glove for sparring!
BUT, and I stress this as a big but. There is little to no padding over the wrist, so if you like to play a more defensive game in sparring, these might not be so great. However if your main concern is your knuckle protection and comfort and protecting your sparring partners face, these are golden.
Again, these are great. Very light at 10oz, protects your knuckles well and gives a satisfying pop on the mitts. They hold up well to heavy bag work too, no complaints after many hard rounds on the bag. Like the horsehairs though, they feel a little front heavy. I prefer the 16pz training gloves for sparring because they feel more evenly balanced than these. But if you place a premium on knuckle protection, these might be the gloves for you.
Nice flat punching profile gives you a nice pop on the bag and mitts.
By now I'm sure you already know, outstanding quality and design.
I guess it comes down to preference. I prefer the 16oz training gloves for sparring over the 10oz Safe-Tecs, but both do a great job. I love the triple cuff on the training gloves, they are works of art. The Safe-Tecs though are very impressive, if you pick up a pair you won't be disappointed.
All 3 are great gloves. Reyes makes top quality stuff, and mexicanfightgear has good prices and excellent service.
I love the 16's for sparring and the fight gloves for mitts and DE. Feel free to shoot me any questions. Hope you enjoyed the review.
