After some days of mulling it over and conversing with others, I've decided on names who just miss the top 20:

21-30:
Peter Jackson
Floyd Patterson
Ezzard Charles
Gene Tunney
Max Baer
Jersey Joe Walcott
Ken Norton
Tim Witherspoon
Michael Moorer
Ike Ibeabuchi

So, I've been thinking it over. And I just couldn't live with myself having Zora Folley in the top 30. And all the other great Heavyweights I would have put ahead of him, no one seemed to agree with me on....SO, I decided to re-think ranking Gene Tunney. So I looked over his career, and he actually did beat some credible Heavyweights before Dempsey and several Light Heavyweights who were also competitive Heavyweights. He's the least proven of anyone on the list, but he does seem to be just as good as anyone else between 21-30. SO, the highest I can fairly rank this guy is ahead of Max Baer. I like the list more now, and I expect one of the Klitchkos to be able to push out Michael Moorer some day. If any one of them loses again in this weak Heavyweight division we have today, it won't happen.

Bumped up Sonny Liston's resume rating to 13. I initially did not count the wins over Marty Marshall, but I've had a change of heart. Beating a green Liston + past his prime but still very dangerous Bob Satterfield is grounds enough to merit B level, despite the fact that both wins never repeated in rematches. Anyways, his ranking @ number 12 stays where it is, so not like this changed anything for him in my mind...

If Sam Peter KOs Chris Arreola I give him a shot at making the 150 greatest Heavyweights of all time. Not saying that fight is even going to happen...just talks of it right now (hopefully it will!). Couple more good wins after that, he can even break 100 greatest. Truth be told, he's an entertaining Heavyweight to watch when he actually shows up in good shape to fight. He needs more focus and commitment, and possibly a better trainer to teach him how to cope with tall fighters.

Why Michael Moorer belongs in this group is beyond me ...

I have a piece about him coming up shortly. I'll save why for then. For now, he couldn't carry the jockstrap of Norton, Walcott, Baer, Tunney, Charles, or Patterson.

He is ranked below them... I asked around for opinions on a lot of guys and my picks got over ruled by...a large margin. Consider him there by boxingforum democracy. I expect a Klitschko to take that spot eventually anyways. Here's guys I threw around for discussion that don't appear on the list:

Ray Mercer
Jimmy Bivins
Zora Folley
Eddie Machen
Jess Willard
Primo Carnera
James J. Corbett
Fred Fulton
James J. Braddock

And I forgot to mention Bob Fitzsimmons at the time, but after he became Heavyweight Champion he basically stopped being a full time fighter. He's definitely in the same boat as these other guys tho. Anyhow, I wanted either Ray Mercer or Jimmy Bivins to fill the slot, and was over ruled terribly.... Who would you put there?

Smile

You see, even Primo Carnera sits above Moorer in a comparison. Moorer only beat one truly top fighter at heavyweight, and that was solely because he caught Evander Holyfield on a hospital-verified bad night. All his other wins were over fringe contenders (Stewart, Both, Cooper).

On top of wins over equally fringe contenders like Paul Uzcudun, Ed Wright, Neil Clisby, Young Stribling, Roy Clark, George Godfrey, Cecil Harris, and Kingfish Levinsky, he has a win and a loss with Jack Sharkey, and the win was a whole lot more legitimate than Moorer's over Holyfield. When he got the title, he hung on to it for longer.

People like to diss Carnera because the mob protected him, but there really is only one truly stinky fight on his resume, and that was the bout with Tommy Loughran. If only some modern fighters could say the same.

It was a lot more fights than just the Loughran fight I'm told. And I don't don't know about beating Sharkey being a better win. I mean, is a past his prime Sharkey better than a prime Holyfield with a heart condition? Hard to say. I mean, I'm sure the condition impeded him more than being past his prime, but Holyfield is also straight up better than Sharkey to begin with. Also, in the Foreman fight he did better than Holyfield did against Big George, just got knocked out before it was over... You can't really belittle the wins over Stewart and Cooper either, both gave Holyfield hell. To belittle Moorer in a way would also be belittling Holyfield...
