"That was a boxing lesson for Kelly Pavlik," said IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham, commenting on previously unbeaten WBC/WBO champion Kelly Pavlik's unexpected loss in a non-title fight to 43-year-old former champ Bernard Hopkins over the weekend. "During the whole fight he never had the slightest chance to hurt Hopkins. Once again it showed that inside the ring you don't have to be the stronger or the younger boxer –- the most intelligent will always win, and Hopkins certainly was more intelligent." As for his future plans, Abraham said, "I will make my mandatory defense against Raul Marquez, [then] I will be happy to come to the USA in February to battle it out for the super championship with Kelly Pavlik –- if Kelly still has enough power and the courage to fight me."

I believe Abraham. The problem is that Pavlik can't squeeze in a mandatory between now and February and I don't think it would be smart for Pavlik's first fight off the Hopkins loss to be against a dangerous class A fighter like Abraham. I think Pavlik would be up for it but there's really no rush. The last thing Pavlik needs is to make another mistake by coming back against a fighter of Abraham's status too quickly.

I'm still undecided on this fight. Especially if this is Pavlik's next fight. He should fight Rubio first to see where he's at.

As his next fight, I'd be very nervous about Kelly's chances. A Rubio fight would be the perfect segueway for him and great way to get his confidence back up to full speed. Not that he's lacking confidence, but a loss that lopsided can't do anybody any favors...

Marquez is as tough as nails and is so experienced, but he takes too many punches and cuts like Hatton on his worst day. Against a guy with the power of Abraham who picks his spots, that will be a huge problem.

I said it from way way back, Pavlik had no business chasing heavier guys. The Abraham fight was always the obvious option and Abraham made it very clear he wanted it. It's a fight I still really want to see.

Who knows? all this yo-yo messing around with the weight, he needs to take it slow, I hope he's not too mentally fragile, having a young family might also weigh in, we'll know for sure in his next fight ....
The yo-yo with the weight won't affect him IMO. It'll all be down to how he reacts mentally.

Agreed.

Can't see Marquez posing any problems for Abraham.

Yes it will be. Abraham will have absolutely zero trouble with Marquez.
Yep.

Yeah, I see no way for Marquez to win.

IMO, Abraham beats Pavlik via ko
Bold prediction, but don't write Pavlik off so soon.

LOL not to open up old wounds but I remember you saying the same thing about Margarito & Cotto LOL If Marquez still has 80% left he'll give Abraham trouble
Oh BTW does Abraham still wear the smurf hat & have that gorgeous girl escort him to the ring??

Abraham has been asking for the fight with Pavlik for a while now and I think that we should give it to him.
He's been asking for it, but he was offered the fight right after the Pavlik-Lockett and his team turned it down, so if he really wanted it, he could have already. Marquez is a mandatory, but all 4 "major" organizations will delay the mandatory deadline for a unification.

Dude cuts on his best day, nevermind his worst.

Anyway, I already saw from 2 credible sources that Pavlik-Rubio will be made for late January or early February. I doubt that it won't be made, they probably agreed to terms long before since they've been talking about it since the spring and both are with Top Rank. Pavlik said he only wanted to fight 2 times in 09, but that plan probably changed after Saturday.
