Words have been swirling around Mexico that WBC superfeatherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez, who is already scheduled to defend his title against Jorge Barrios on September 15, will now face Marco Antonio Barrera in a rematch.

Although Golden Boy Promotions has yet to confirm nor deny this story, a story from Notifight indicates that a Marquez-Barrera showdown has already been calendared in the headquarters of the World Boxing Council in Mexico.

A Marquez-Barrera fight will still be a highly-anticipated showdown, considering the close nature of their first encounter last March 17 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

This time the fight is scheduled to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, venue of the biggest boxing event in recent history, the May 5 Oscar De la Hoya-Floyd Mayweather superbout.

A Marquez-Barrera fight would also push superstar Manny Pacquiao further into the fringes, with no marquee name available for him to fight in the near future.

A Pacquiao-Humberto Soto clash on October 6 is seen as a high-risk, low-reward propositon for the Filipino icon, and after he takes care of Soto, Pacquiao would then no longer have a big-name opponent in Top Rank's stable of fighters to look forward to.

Golden Boy Promotions, on the other hand, counts such marquee names as Marquez, Barrera, Joan Guzman, Edwin Valero and even Jorge Barrios in its line-up.

If GBP comes out victorious in the court over the promotional right on Pacquiao, the Filipino can then arrange for himself a bout with Barrera, and move on to a possible three-bout series with Marquez, a three-bout series with Guzman, etc for purses unheard of in Philippine sports history

i hope barrear wins, just so we get to see it for a third time. These fights are good for boxing. There are plenty of young and up and comers for manny to fight, but after the barrera/marquez fights are over, you know marquez will go after manny. IMO no one still beats pac if he's at the best of his game.
