Barrera/Marquez II seems like a done deal.

WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez will face former champion Marco Antonio Barrera in a title rematch on September 15 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena or Argentinean Jorge Barrios.

This was revealed by Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer in an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today even as bitter rival Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions claimed Marquez was asking for too much money for a rematch with Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao and was not a fighter who could draw the crowds.

Schaefer said if Barrera didn’t want to do it, it was fine by him because Barrios would step up and Golden Boy considers him “a very exciting fighter for Marquez.” Schaefer said the fights will be covered by HBO. The 30 year old Barrios has a record of 47-3-1with 34 knockouts. In his last fight Barrios scored a third round knockout over Thailand’s Decho Bankluaygym on April 21 this year, decking the Thai fighter once in the first round and then again in the third before putting him away,. Bankluaygym had earlier dropped a ten round decision to Filipino southpaw Czar Amonsot on March 18, 2006.

In an earlier showdown with the touted Joan Guzman who was mentioned by Arum as a possible opponent for Pacquiao later this year, Barrios lost a split decision on September 16 last year.

Schaefer responded to Arum’s comments belittling Marquez pointing out that when Marquez was with Arum he always said he was “the best fighter in that particular weight class and now since he’s not with him anymore suddenly Marquez is nothing.”

It seems the opposite to me. The mention the rematch and then nochalantly slide in the part about the other possible opponent. It's politics ;)
agreed, but i like the fact that its still being talked about rather than not.
Yea I just thought Marco did all he could in the first fight and I had him winning. I am not sure if he would match that again.
ya know, i didnt score the fight by rounds, but i had it a draw at the end. I have watched the fight about 3 times and never wanted to score round by round. In my mind, when the bell rings and ends the fight, neither man lose. Thats why i think they should do it again. I think barrera has more left than most 33 year olds, but i think marquez may have a little more. Either way, its about time marquez gets his 15minutes or longer of fame. Him and his brother.
I had Marco edging out this fight, but it could easily go either way. I could see a draw as well. I just don't want to see Marco get beaten badly.
im the same way with you. My favorite fighter back in the day was prince naseem and i after barrera took him apart, i really hated barrera, just becasue ya know, but i kept up with him ever since that fight and have mad respect for the guy and he is one of my favorite fighters now aday, i would love to see barrera win, then they can fight a third time, that way barrera has another memorable trilogy and possibly comes out on top, then the winner can fight pac , and settle that dispute there.

Man that would be nice but I don't see Barerra being in 2 more fihgts with Marquez and then a bout with Pacquiao.
