I was watching the highly controversial 7th round of the Jack Dempsey vs. Gene Tunney for the long count in 1927. It was said that the official time that tunney was down was 14 seconds but i watched the timmer... from when he was down till he got up it was acctually 20 seconds... look for yourselves YouTube - Gene Tunney -vs- Jack Dempsey II "The Long Count" 1927

It was so long because the count doesn't start until the fighter goes to a neutral corner and stays there. At that time that was a new rule and Dempsey wasn't used to it and wanted to get at Tunney as he was getting up. The ref did the right thing not starting the count until Dempsey stayed in the neutral corner.
