Duran insulting Leonard's wife

Well, you have to wonder about Duran. If there is an award for boxing's biggest baddest badass award, surely Duran would be a genuine candidate, if not a winner. At the very least, Duran is a twisted picture of human nature. His machismo was so colossal, his self belief so invincible and talent undoubtable that, to a normal person, his behavior showed itself in quite absurd and unbelievable ways. This makes Duran such an interesting character in the history of boxing, one that is equally fascinating and repulsive at the same time.

Now, what has started me off on this topic is that today I was reading Dundee's rather crap autobiography and he devotes an entire chapter to Duran and Leonard. The book itself is poor because Dundee shows himself to be no better than a fanboy. His observations on Duran are close to rubbish. However, the best parts of the book are the priceless anecdotes he relates. My goodness, Dundee describes Duran's various antics in vivid detail. Duran displayed such open and naked hatred toward Leonard, he demeaned his manhood, abused him to his face and rudely gestured at him at every opportunity. Yet it was not enough. All this culminated when Duran turned his attention towards Mrs Leonard. He was shockingly bad towards her. In front of Leonard, the welterweight champion of the world, he openly told her he was going to do her after he kills her husband in the ring!!! Duran would also thrust his hips towards her to remind her of his intentions. Can anyone believe this? What do you do, or what can you do when a Duran does this to you? Dundee also relates how Mrs Leonard feinted during the fight. The poor woman!!!! I feel sorry for her but she had no business being there.

So what do you guys think about this badass Duran. Was he sick or what? What made him tick? Can anyone try and explain him? :dunno:

Well iono what weight class you're in but i'm taught to be quick on my feet and i have a lot of speed. They can't bring down what they can't catch
with something to throw they can ;)
Yeah but i'm too quick to let them grab anything to throw
i thought that too before i realized that he could throw distance with accuracy. *rubs bump on head*
Well if that was duran having something thrown at him he'd rip someones head off
Well if that was duran having something thrown at him he'd rip someones head off
of course.... with a spork too.
I wonder how humble he is now :dunno:
idk. he is a nice guy though, and he helped out a lot of the poorer people around his home in Panama.
I guess he's a mean guy when he has to fight you
that definately worked for Ali. God I have been doing this so much tonight. I am going to have to go. See you later man.
Ya man Ali took the gold for that one. Goodnight man take it easy

Duran was one of the fighters. Absolutely fantastic :D.

I doubt he has changed his opinion of SRL LOL

However, truly one of the greatest of all time, to go 15 rounds with the invincible Hagler (at the time) for a lightweight is truely special (and the judges unless im mistaken had the fight even going into the 14 round, truly a legend.

You want to read this book - it is brilliant:
Amazon.co.uk: Four Kings: Leonard, Hagler, Hearns and Duran and the Last Great Era of Boxing: George Kimball: Books

It's been out less than two months and I already finished it. As for your point about Duran not changing his opinion, at the end of the book it mentions that. Here is the extract:

A few years ago the two did find themselves together in Mexico City for a WBC convention. Leonard was having breakfast in a coffee shop when Cholo walked in.

"Hey Roberto," Leonard beckoned with a smile, "come over here. Come over here and sit down, goddamn it!"

As the two old rivals sat across the table from each other, Leonard said "I need to know something. We're older, we've got kids and grandchildren, so you can tell me now. Do you hate me as much as you seemed to hate me back then?"

"Ray, Ray, no no no no!" said Duran, looking offended. "I was only acting."

"Acting?" Leonard laughed. "Well you must have been a damned good actor then, because you sure convinced me!"

Thanks for bring that up. Looks that what Duran was doing was just to sell tickets.
Duran self confident comes from the fact that on the street he was the baddest man walking the earth. I believe he just LOVED a good fight and would do anything to get himself up for it. And as far as taking your boxing skills to the street I believe what Jack Dempsey said "Knock them out as fast as you can because if don't anything can happen".

Jack Dempsey certainly applied that logic in the fights against Jess Willard in 1919 and the Luis Firpo in 1923 ;)
