I think its pretty safe to say that theres not a professional boxer who I can say is actually AFRAID of another fighter. If someone doesn't take a fight with someone else I'm sure there is a good reason. There is a lot of talk about Hatton being scared of someone, Mayweather being scared of someone and Kessler being scared of someone else. Do you really believe thats the case? I think its crazy to think these guys are really scared to fight another fighter.

I dont think its really that theyre scared of the other guy but that theyre scared they'll lose. The perfect example was Riddick Bowe he avoided Lennox Lewis like he had the plague. He knew if he ever got in the ring with Lewis odds are he'd be KO"d again. I was present when Lennox and a girl dressed in a chicken suit with CHICKEN BOWE emblazoned across it harassed and goaded him all to no avail

Exactly. People tend to forget we are talking about professional fighters. The only reason a boxer doesnt fight another boxer other than money is if he's a young prospect and wanna work his way up instead of going straight for the top dog.

I don't know if they are scared but they sure aren't taking the fights that will better their career. Some fighters have more to gain from fighting certain fighters (Hatton getting WBC belt from Witter). Then there are others that could make more money going a seperate route and have no higher title to gain (Mayweather being Ring,WBC, and Mega-rematch on the way) from fighting certain fighters.

Either way it pisses me off that fights don't get made. Im a boxing fan and I'd love for everyone to fight anyone without hesitation. It's a shame the industry has become so complicated with business dealings.

Some fighters do fear other fighters. Just look at Frank Bruno before his second fight with Tyson. The man was scared to death. Somebody should of told him it didn't matter how many times he crossed himself. God wasn't coming down to save him.

Well with a fighter like Tyson and his power I would totally understand but a lot of people are talking about Hatton being afraid of Witter. HAHAHHAHAHA Soooo Hatton is afraid to fight Witter but not Mayweather. Give me a ******* break.

Its not that they are afraid of the acctual fighter, its that they are scard to lose.Remember all these top guys train basically everyday of their lives (all through childhood) to get where they are now. With just a lose or 2 that all could go to waste and the spotlight will be on someone else. Situations where there is alot to lose and little to gain scares fighters i think. Thats why i think fights like mosley judah will be a good one. Both are in desperate need of a win and they both have alot to gain.

I agree with Tommy here. I think that just about every boxer is scared to some extent before just about every competitive fight. It is human nature and a lack of fear presents a problem. Great thread idea by the way.
Tensed but not scared. You got chills down your spine because you know you gotta give it your best. I call that getting focused.

Great topic! I agree with you 100%. Professional fighters at the top level are not "afraid" of fighting anybody. I believe the fans are at fault for the cautious matchmaking. Americans love undefeated fighters so managers are always attempting to seek a favorable opponent.

Bowe would have fought Lewis if A: He wasn't brain damaged by Golota and B: If Lewis would have paid him more. However, it wasn't worth it to Lewis. He didn't need Bowe. We all wanted to see it but Bowe was busy kidnapping his family instead of training.

Kessler just fought Calzaghe but he is now afraid of Miranda? Hatton fought Mayweather but is now afraid of Witter? Mayweather is afraid of Cotto because....Cotto beat Mosely?

I think that calling out potential opponents and saying that they are scared helps build a fight and also may help the accuser at the bargaining table. I've often thought that if I was a pro I would fight "on the cheap" and I would fight everybody just to give the fans what they want.

I guess the days of someone cleaning out a division like Ali did (3 times in 3 decades) are over. Also gone are the days when an olympic Gold Medalist (Pete Rademacher) takes on the HW Champion of the World (Floyd Patterson) in his first professional fight.

Bowe knew after the beating he took in the olympic final from Lennox there was no way in hell he could beat him.
