NEW YORK - Retirement by definition is final. Let’s be honest and say Floyd Mayweather Jr. is taking a vacation.

The unofficial pound-for-pound king said before his 12-round, split-decision victory over Oscar De La Hoya on Saturday that he would hang it up for good afterward. But he hedged at a post-fight press conference and said during a whirlwind media blitz in New York on Thursday that he’s waiting for De La Hoya to call for a rematch.

“We had a good fight,” Mayweather said, chomping on a sandwich at HBO headquarters. “I think that number two would be even better, because we can fight toe-to-toe. And I really have nothing else to prove in this sport.”

In my opinion the fight is just about a gaurantee. There is too much money to be made there. At least he really isn't swaying in his decision because he said all along before the fight that he would give Oscar a rematch after he beat him.

what a joke!!
Here are my final thoughts about Floyd in general and not specific to this fight. I was trying to understand why it is that so many people don't like the guy and some love him and I can only come to the conclution that those of us that don't care for him . have this opinion because we hold all fighters to a minimun standard that is to say that we expect every fighter regardless of style to do certain things in the ring some more then others depending on their skill level. I believe that Floyd could do much better and only does enough to win an not put himself out .and that drives me up a wall. The fact that anyone considers this man to be p4p best guy is absurd. The man we saw on Saturday night was not the picture of what a boxer should be!! not the Sugar Robinson of old. Not Ali speed and sting but a guy that wants nothing more then to walk out of that ring with a win. there is no warrior in there no desire to make the fans clamor for more. this is not a man that would put his life on the line like we have seen from so many others Castillo,Corrales,Chavez,Barrera,Morales,Mckenney,Holyfield etc.these are guys that have never held the tittle of p4p best yet they are the fabric of our sport the reason we love boxing.Gentleman I say let's uphold the standards. History will show the wins but we the fans will know the truth. This man is not p4p the best by far not in the ring at least. He is athletic yes fast yes skilled yes but all that does not a great fighter make. the qualities that make a great fighter are not present in this man in my view and we should not be afraid to call him on it.

Great post!!!! I think you hit it right on the nail. And believe me, I know exactly what you're saying. Floyd has the tools to be one of the greatest ever, yet he does only enough just to get by. Thats why I can't resist laughing whenever I hear him say he has nothing left to prove!!! But you have to realize something WG, just because we share the same opinion doesn't mean everybody else does. There are some people that think that floyd is already one of the best for different reasons.

Hes not even close to being the best. maybe he is a great boxer but I think his greatest fear is losing and being ko is a even greater fear for BF. Thats why his dont take the hard fights and thats why he performs the way he does in his fights.

Floyd is a natural lightweight. I see your opinions but you are one of the guys who want to compare and match today's fighters with old fighters. Why take risks when you can get the win. He could go and try to KO people and get caught with a lucky punch and lose. I say screw that and get the win. I have a LOT more to say about this and will at some point.

I am one of them. Just because he doesn't go in there and brawl like some of the oldschool guys doesn't mean he isn't a great. Look at other sports. They are evolving and will continue too.

he's not a nayural lightweight now, 2 years ago yes. floyd would have no chance of getting down to 135 now, no way in hell!!

140 would be hard for him now although he could probably still make it.

but floyd thinks he can fight at the higher weights so his loyal fans should stop making excuses for him, he does the minimum to get by.

if floyd was a natural 135 guy he wouldn't think twice about moving down there to fight pac but he's not, he's just boring and his fans should recognise.

you all know me and know where i stand on this. I do agree, if he wants to be the best, he must continue to fight and win impressively, but boxing has changed alot of the yeras, as you all know. We dotn get the classic slugfest in every fight. I figured you gusy would be happy with the rematch. Gives oscar another chance. I'll say this, Floyd skill wise, is one of the best ever, floyd exciting wise, not the best, his style isnt meant to be exciting against larger men. Can he be exciting? most definently, we will all be watching to see when he takes that chance. I dont see floyd getting knocked out anytime soon and i think someone needs to tell him that because he is afradi to get hit, who isnt, but he does need to fight a little more. Not for me, but for you guys. And im not saying anything bad about you guys, you are fans, and its important to please the fans.

His evasive tactics are very exciting to me. I go crazy when he makes people look stupid in the ring by avoiding shot after shot. That is exciting as can be to me. He would hang pacman out to dry at any weight. Floyd has what pacman doesn't and that is a LOT of SKILL on both sides of the fight game.
