Hi, I am really new at this, I just started cardio boxing at my local gym, its a 1 hour of cardio boxing or however its called, its pretty intensive and by the end of the class I am drenched in sweat and my hands are hurting, I must confess that I hit the heavy bag as hard as I can(call it stress release), I usually pick the 140lb pound bag becuase its heavier. At the end of the class and throughout the next day my hands and my knuckles hurt, is this normal? I've been doing this for about a month. Someone told me that it was normal becuase I was starting and it had something to do with the tear and repair of the hand which in the end will make it stronger. Any advice? I wrap my hands as tight as I can without cutting circulation. Another questions I have is what exactly am I working in these types of classes, most of the exercises are focused on the different types of punches and hitting the bag and a lot of leg work. Any insight will be appreciated.

Thanks.

How much do you wrap around your knuckles? When I first started boxing I didn't wrap around my knuckles as much and they soon became sore. After a few weeks they got better though. I would wait and see first.

If I were you, I'd wait about a month and see if your knuckles toughen up. If they don't. then I'd suggest getting longer wraps and wrapping more around you knuckles.

my hands dont swell, at least I dont notice it but they feel loose, like I cant make a tight fist, this happens only once a while, although after hitting the bag really hard the next day when I try to do it, it hurts so I cant hit it as hard as the day before, it takes a day or so to get back to normal. I am not sure if I have to wrap my hand really tight or just average. Does anyone know the medical behind the hands and knuckels feeling loose and hurting?

Your hands are healing damaged cartilage and muscle fibers, its normal. It's natural to build up small amounts of scar tissue in your hands from boxing from repeated impact. Just make sure your wrapping your hands right and hitting the bag correctly. What kind of gloves are you using, and what kind of wraps do you wear?

The gloves should be alright for now but the wraps you have are garbage. You need to atleast get the mexican style wraps 180", yours are 98" and don't provide enough protection imo.

We used them 180" mexican style handwraps. I wrap all the boxers using the Ribbon Style #1, Method #4 that you find on boxinggyms.com - Boxing Gyms and Clubs. This gives added protection to the top of the knuckles and also separates the knuckles to keep from bunching together. Try to hit with a three knuckle landing (Dempsey). That is to aim with the ring finger and let the little, ring, middle finger absorb the impact. This is also you power line. If you hit just with the middle there is a chance you can break it and if you hit only with the index knuckle there is the chance you will sprain you wrist. Maybe this helps...
