I read a feature recently on a boxing site discussing who would win in a fight between these 2 heavyweights. Most of the writers went with Marciano...which is bordering on the psychotic. not only is haye taller, heavier and has the longer reach he is alos the faster and without a shadow of a doubt the more skillfull fighter (has anyone seen how rocky fought? it lookd like he had lead in his boots and he swung like a wild young up and coming pro boxer). i have always said marciano is very very overrated and just looking at his resume proves it. he was the best of his era but it was a transition period between the end of joe louis and the arrival of floyd patterson, liston and Ali.

I read during the filming of superfight that Ali made fun of Marciano's toupe and knocked it off, resulting in a scuffle and marciano landing a body shot on Ali and flooring him gasping for air, even at the age of 45 i think it was? With Ali saying he couldnt beleive how much power Rocky had.

Marciano was often critized by the fighter's of his own era for fighting that way, but after they fought him they said he was much harder to hit clean than what it looked, and none of them ever questioned his strength, punching power, or chin.

In mid 1969 (just months before he was killed) Marciano and Ali sparred with eachother for 60 rounds for the superfight film that was done between them. Ali was 27 and Marciano was only a couple months shy of 46 when they sparred. The out of shape Marciano gained a tremendous amount of respect from Ali from their sparring.

Ali on Marciano:

In regards to the match up, I think it'd be exciting while it lasted, but I think it would end in a Marciano-Layne esque KO. Haye would probably shake Marciano up a bit early, but soon enough Marciano would be all over him and end it with 1 big over hand right that puts Haye to sleep in the middle rounds, like Marciano did to Layne.

ali was just being modest . its obvious. plus i dont think marcian ois an atg . he lookd amazing againt an old louis, walcott and archie moore (who was 42 when he fought marciano) thats a joke. but he had power. my point is he would not b able to land consistently against the haye of today. not haye of 5 or so years ago.

Yea.... Really, Haye would probably beat the brakes off of Marciano, BUT if Marciano had today's trainers, diet, workouts, etc.. He would probably KILL Haye. You can't really knock someone who is the BEST of their era...

Ali doesn't do modest. He trashed many fighters of the past while active and the respect he has/had for Marciano was genuine.

Marciano kills Haye.

No, Ali was never modest, even about greats from the past. He had no problem saying that he would knock out Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey, etc. The only fighter Ali never knocked was Marciano, and much of that has to do with their brief sparring sessions. You seem to say that Louis was old (yes, but had he beaten Marciano he would've gotten the title shot. He was still a good fighter), Walcott was old (despite him fighting the best he had ever fought around the time Marciano fought him), and that Moore was (despite him being in the best time of his career, like Walcott).

Also, Archie Moore was in his late 30's when he fought Marciano (some say 38, others say 39) the official tale of the tape says he was 38.

Marciano is very arguably the hardest trainer of all time, the man took no short cuts or breaks. He would do nothing but train, which is why he would weigh in at the weights that he did. He was losing 20-30lbs for every fight.

I agree that if Marciano fought today he would weigh more, he would probably weigh in about 210 and his midsection/chest would be more bulked up, but I don't think it would add anything but weight. If anything it would take away from his incredible stamina.

Haye doesn't really have the stamina to run with Marciano though. Even if he nailed him a few times, he'd never be able to keep the most well conditioned heavyweight of all time off his back. Marciano is bound to land some leather and we've all seen Haye take leather from far lighter punchers, and it ain't pretty.

the points u make are al hypothetical. how can u possibly say guys like louis, moore and walcott were not past their best?? they were in their late 30s...not even modern day athletes are at their best let alone boxers. specially in boxers from rockys era who would have fought many hard tough ring brawls. guys like moore and walcott..their bodies were battered and bruised. and on the point of ali not being modest, he often described floyd patterson as the most technically skilled fighter he ever fought, sugar ray robinson as the greatest fighter he ever saw. frazier as the greatest fighter he ever fought... much of what he said was hype in his younger days...as he got older and matured he became more serious during interviews, only coming out with jibes against other fighters for comedic value. and i just want to say ali at his peak would have destroyed marciano..maybe no KO but marciano would have been mentally and physically destroyed by the 15th..if the fight wasn't already stopped.

Marciano KO5

It'd look similar to what Tszyu-Judah did, where Judah was athletically superior, but end up with Haye getting careless and knocked out.

Not because Haye was clowning around, but more or less a holes in his defense opening up because of the pressure.

I used to think Judah could've won that fight, but in reality, at some point or another, Tszyu would've found a way to knock him out.

ill agree that marciano has a punchers chance, can't take away from the fact he was one of the hardest punchers in boxing. period.
