Continuing his quest to, once again, become heavyweight champion of the world, Evander ”Real Deal” Holyfield kicked off the June 30th “The Road to the Heavyweight Championship” card in El Paso today at UTEP’s Don Haskins Center.
Holyfield, 41-8-2 (27 KOs), will tangle with former contender Lou Savarese, 46-6 (38 KOs)—and the former champion made it clear that he will use Savarese as a springboard to a possible title shot before the end of the year.
“Age ain’t nothing but a number, if you are willing to pay the price,” said the 44-year-old, former four-time world heavyweight champion.
“And I have been paying that price since I was eight years old.”
When asked which of the four heavyweight champions Holyfield would like to face he said, “I want to be the undisputed champion of the world.
“Which ever opportunity comes first—that is the one that I am going to take.”
But first, he must get by Savarese.
“Savarese is a big guy and he is strong,” said famed boxing trainer Ronnie Shields, who will be training Holyfield for this fight.
“Evander will have to be on his ‘A’ game to beat him.”
My thoughts: Honestly, as weak as the HW division is I could see him making a move and would love too. Larry Holmes should come back too!
