IT'S OK SERGEI... Nov 5, '06 10:02 AM
by Jim for everyone

neverlast
Talk about a nightmare. What it must be like to lose your prize possession within seconds of retaining it. How badly Sergei Liakhovich must feel right now after losing his WBO heavyweight title to Shannon Briggs in the waning seconds of the final round. The deep inner pain Sergei is feeling now surely hurts worse then any punches Briggs landed.

I felt that this was a good match up for Sergei. Briggs is huge, much bigger then the Briggs that lost to Lennox Lewis. Nevertheless the size took away a lot of the speed that Shannon once had. Sergei has pretty fast hands and he punches well in combination. He is also a good body puncher and I thought that would wear down Briggs. Also Shannon has never been known to have the best chin in the world. Add all this up and on paper it looked like a solid advantage for Sergei.

Where did it all go wrong ? The Liakhovich - Lamon Brewster match that won Sergei the WBO title was a barn burner, one of the best heavyweight fights I've seen in years.Brewster set a blistering pace and Sergei stayed right with him punch for punch. In the Briggs fight, Shannon set a very slow pace and Sergei seemed to be content to go along with it. Neither boxer seemed to be willing to carry the fight to the other and it made for a pretty dull contest. Still Sergei was doing the better work. He was fighting a smart fight if not an exciting one. This was reflected on the cards as Liakhovich was ahead 106-103 on two cards and 105-104 on the other. Even after the first knockdown, if Sergei would have made it to the bell losing a 10-8 round he still wins a split decision and retains his title. Such a shame for Sergei.

Give Briggs his due. He hung in there and when the opportunity presented itself he took full advantage of it. What's next for Shannon ? I'd like to see an immediate return with Liakhovich but it was a bore and I doubt if the fans will be clamoring for a rematch. I heard talk of Briggs meeting Evander Holyfield if he gets by Fres Oquendo. That would really be a horrible match as both Shannon and Vander are terribly slow these days.

What about Liakhovich ? One quick judgement and I may be be wrong is that Sergei fights to the level of his competition. He has the tools and is well schooled but his trainer Kenny Weldon can't get in there a fight for him. Personally I think Lamon Brewster is a better fighter then Briggs and that is a match up I'd like to see if and when Lamon is ready to box again.

I thought Briggs fought an unusual fight for himself. He normally is more of an attacker. Still I predicted Briggs Placing Sergi head in the Third row, looks like I missed it by one row. I also thought Briggs would take care of him with in 5 rds, but I am not forsure if Briggs threw more than 3 punches in the first 5 rounds

If he woulda survived another 10 seconds he woulda won & I would not lost 200 points betting.

Ugly fight I am surprised Briggs Ko'd him late. I thought Briggs would have to win in the 1st 5 rounds or so.

I thought the same, I thought if Briggs was going to win, it would of been in with in the first 5 rounds.

Sorry, I do not think much of Sergi, but I do not think that much more of Briggs.
Briggs does have a lot of power, but I think a more pure boxer will take him out.

Sadly enough I only see two heavyweight's right now who are worth anything at all

Wlad Klitschko and Calvin Brock. These two are heads and heels above everyone else.

Peter and McCline are not bad, but just so inconstant. McCline, one days will destroy his opponet, then the next time he is crying in the corner. :dunno:
Peter, who has freakish power and a soild chin, has the boxing skills of a Gorllia.

And Where is Corey Sanders. He had Speed, and Power. Did he finially retire and join the Old man's PGA ??

I would say Toneys stock rose from seein how bad these 2 looked:dunno:

The winner of Toney vs Peter should get a title shot & has to be considered in the top 5 heavyweights.

I really thought Liakhovich would hold the belt for at least a year or so. Maybe 3 defenses.

I think thats one of his problems is inactivity. He has not fought since April & he has only fought 2 times in the last 2 years.

If he is gonna continue his career he needs to fight 4 times a year. They dont all have to be big fights but stay active.

I still say that Toney will be the next undisputed heavyweight champ of the world.

Like Toney said "I Dont Get Knocked Out." he proved that to be true. he took the best shot that Peters could give him. Peters is the hardest hitting heavyweight out right now. In the rematch Toney will beat him easily (Toney ud 116 to 111 Peters loses a point for rabbit punches)

4 Times a year is a bit much , especially for a heavywieght. Twice a year is certaintly reasonable though.

It doesnt hurt to fight a tune up on ESPN or a PPV undercard. He could fight an easy fight & still fight 2 or 3 more times a year.

Either way its better than his 2 fights in 2 years.

It also can be money again... Every time when this guy (Don King) arranges fights lots of money is involved...Maybe this fight was corrupted as well...Just Remember the fight Lewis VS Holifield when it was draw...

if peters conditioning was better in the first fight theres no doubt he would have won by tko, toney looked hurt a few times but peter weighing in at 260 was bad judgement if he can come in this time about 245-250 he will get the tko, by the way i thought peter won the first fight by 2 rounds.

1st Holyfield vs Lewis was one of the most disgusting things I have seen in boxing. That draw was horrible.

Erik you got to be kidding when you said that you think Peters won by a few points. Toney clearly won that fight. So I guess you thought that The Rock won his fight with Toney too?
