No source, just saw it on teletex just now.

Jeff is quoted as saying the games corupt and he wants nothing more to do with it. He's also saying he'd advise against turning pro to anybody.

Yeah right Jeff, this has nothing to do with you being a shot fighter.

I doubt he'll go through with it. Winky doesn't seem to think he will.

Jeff "Left Hook" Lacy - "I'm Retiring!"

by James Slater: Jeff Lacy, the former IBF super-middleweight champion, won a tougher than expected ten-round decision over Epifanio Mendoza only this past Wednesday, seemingly setting himself up for a big fight with Jermain Taylor. Yet today, in an article that has appeared in The Tampa Tribune, Lacy has let it be known he intends to retire from boxing altogether..

"I'm retiring," Lacy is reported to have said with frustration clear in his voice. "There will be no fight between me and Jermain [Taylor]. I'm just retiring, I'm done. This business is dirty. That's all I have to say. This is a very dirty business. I would advise anyone who has kids not to let them ever fight in this business."

Lacy's shocking comments have left his trainer, Roger Bloodworth perplexed, as have they promoter Lou DiBella - who handles former middleweight champion Taylor.

"I don't know," said Bloodworth, when asked to comment on why his fighter has decided to call it quits. "I haven't talked to him. If there has been anything to upset him, he hasn't told me. I don't know."

DiBella, too, is at a loss.

"Put it this way, I've heard nothing from anyone in his camp indicating anything other than the fight's [Vs. Taylor, set for November 15th] happening," DiBella said. "We have a Nov. 15th date on HBO."

If Lacy is indeed serious about quitting, it will perhaps not come as quite as big a shock to a good number of Eastside Boxing readers. Only hours after his struggle against Mendoza was over with were there numerous comments left by fans saying Lacy was "done as a top class fighter" and that he should "retire before he gets himself hurt." It seems the advice of these fans has been adhered to. Then again - as was the case after Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr recently and prematurely announced his retirement - Lacy may decide to fight on after all.

One person who thinks this will be the case is his good friend, former world champion Winky Wright.

"He ain't done. He's probably mad, but he ain't done," Wright declared. "I know he's not done."

Time will tell, but for now we must take the 31-year-old Jeff "Left Hook" Lacy, 24-1(17) at his word. Lacy turned pro in February of 2001, became the IBF 168-pound world champion in October of 2004. Making four successful retentions, Lacy was then badly beaten over 12 rounds by Joe Calzaghe. Many claim Jeff was never the same after the drubbing he took from the Welshman. Perhaps Lacy agrees and this is the reason behind his surprise decision?
Dissapointed. Would have loved to have seen Taylor school him.

Yeah, Winky is quoted as saying he's maybe just pissed off. From the way Lacy was talking though i thought he sounded genuine.

Id have thought he'd have got paid against Taylor first though.

Exactly. He could have made a decent pay day against Taylor to settle him for about a year before he decided he wants to fight again. I'm almost 99% certain we'll see Lacy in the ring again.

Agree

Retirement might be a wise choice for Lacy. He might get hurt fighting more high caliber fighters. When was the last time he looked good as a fighter? He's basically a puncher with a decent chin and mediocre defense. He's a little slow and yet he took a lot of good shots from a guy who's even slower. That being said, he could still have some decent paydays before being relegated to the "opponent" category for fighters trying to make a name for themselves.

quite sad really. he has a big heart in the ring. i never use to like him, but after the calzaghe fight i saw how much heart he had. he never gave up. he should most definitely try and work on things with someone else.

Jeff Lacy: "Jermain Taylor Fight is Off, I'm Retired!" - Boxing News

Lacy has never changed the way he fights. His terrible defense is starting to take a toll on him...
I fail to see anything that happened last night could be the reason he thinks boxing is dirty and is retiring. Lacy won a decision over Mendoza in a fight that was so close it could have gone either way. If he'd lost the decision I maybe could understand it upsetting him.
I think he's made the right decision though he took a beating as his defence was attrocious. Call it a day Jeff before you get seriously hurt

he might as well retire, that guy rattle the hell out those last marbles Lacy has rolling around up there, that fight was supposed to showcase his come back effort and it turned into a life and death struggle, the man oviously can not take a solid shot on top of the dome anymore, I salute him for being honest with himself he gave boxing all he had, now there's nothing more to give....there's no shame in that ...

The part about boxing being corrupt, sounds like frustration and sour grapes to me, then again who knows sounds like he got short changed along the way some where ha! plus he seems to have a thug mentality as in me against the world bull......
