Jermain Taylor update!

Wednesday, February 28 2007

By Josh Barron

Still no firm site for WBC/WBO middleweight champion Jermain Taylor's next defense against unbeaten Contender: Season One champion Sergio Mora. Contender producer Jeff Wald told Fightnews.com that the HBO-televised fight will take place on either May 19 or June 2 and won't be in Taylor's hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas. Las Vegas and Miami are the frontrunners. In other Jermain Taylor news, Taylor and renowned cut man Ray Rodgers were inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame with the Class of 2007 last Friday evening at North Little Rock’s Alltel Arena which also houses the Hall

Disappointing to hear that the fight with Mora is still on. Sergio Mora is a ESPN-level fighter who's got no business fighting for the MW title based on some undeserved TV fame.
People ask me why I don't watch the contender. You may get some good fighters out of it but it's another way of watering down boxing.:(

Boxing needs this

as much as i hate to admit it boxing needs these 2 fights. People need to see how fake this contender stuff is. For the first time were putting top level pro's in with guys that beat up on nobody's and got soem spotlight on espn. Once calzage and taylor kill manfredo and mora, what do u think that sets up? a mega fight between the two undefeated superstars. Its what calzage has been waiting for and it will be the first time we see taylor fight another undefeated highly regarded boxer. It gives the two guys a chance to look real good, which will add to the money involved in their showcase fight. Thats the only way i can describe these fights. It had to happen sometime and im glad that the two contenders are facing guys that will kick their ass.

these 2 guys (manfredo/mora) get a bit more respect from me. although i dont think they should be in with the 2 no#1 guys in the division id still say they would be strap contenders. mora had a good win over reagan and manfredo had 2 good wins over spina and pemberton who were both ranked but a bit passed there best days. the fasion manfredo put spina and pemberton away is what impressed me. never the less i exspect both calzaghe and taylor to win before the half way point. but with taylor he has a habit of fighting to his opponents level.

What would happen to the Contender if 1 or both of these guys won?(which i don't see happening) Just a "what if" question.
it would get the respect it curently doesn't have.

Its hard to be labeled with that "fighting down to weaker competiton" for Jermaine Taylor, especially seeing has how in his last 4 fights(17 months total mind you) hes fought B-Hop twice, Winky once -both considered premier boxers, and a very game Kassim Ouma who he tried for the KO against early and wore himself down.
Im not a Jermaine fan either, but when your fighting the top competition, i dont think a statement like that is at all valid.

i dont understand how anyone could hate taylor, he is a rare good guy. He tells it how it is, isnt cocky at all and does what he has to do to win. He tried so hard to knockout ouma last time around that it didnt come. That always happens, and ouma had an amazing chin. i thought he beat hopkins and winky fairly easy. And those are huge names in boxing today, you'll eventually get what u want to see when he fights calzage, but other than that, whos better? i dont see anyone beating him unless miranda gets in a lucky punch and knocks him out cold, but i dont see that happening seeing how taylro has a good chin. He is still young and has alot to improve on and i would just say to watch out for him in the future.

See I don't like him because In my opinion he lost to Hopkins the 1st time, clearly and should've lost to Winky. I will say that if Winky had thrown a few more punches they would've had to give it to him. I really like B-hop and think he should still have the belt. I met Taylor in Fayettville and he was nice as can be, I agree there. I just dont really like his fight game.

If you watch Floyd for pure tactical skill you would understand why I like the guy so much.
i watch winky for that at least he can engage a bit.
