In a fight against his first "live" opponent, "Baby" Joe Mesi (35-0, 25 knockouts) takes on Cuban fighter Rafael “The Cajun Connection” Pedro (20-5, 14 knockouts) in the 10-round main event of at the L’Auberge du Lac Hotel and Casino in Lake Charles, La. Christy Martin appears in the co-feature.
The bout with Pedro marks the seventh fight for Mesi in the last twelve months. Since returning from a lenghty medical suspension, Mesi has been keeping very active to get himself back in the in the mix for a title shot. The fight will be for the vacant WBC United States Heavyweight title. Pedro is a very large heavyweight, standing at 6'7, weighing 240-pounds and holding a six-inch reach advantage in the fight. Mesi is 6'1 and has been fighting around 225-230 as of late.
Mesi father and manager, Jack Mesu, told the Tonawanda News , that his son will keep up the active schedule to eventually land a title shot.
“Joe’s fighting like a man possessed — signing for his seventh fight in a 12-month span. That’s a big schedule and shows his determination to fight someday soon for the heavyweight championship of the world,” Jack Mesi said.
