John Duddy Returns June 28th - Has The Middleweight's Marketability Been Damaged?
by James Slater: If he'd beaten his last opponent, Walid Smichet, in a dominant and overwhelming fashion Ireland's John Duddy would very likely have been challenging middleweight champion of the world Kelly Pavlik this Saturday. But, as fans are aware, the unbeaten 28-year-old instead had one hell of a time with the largely unknown Canadian native on the Klitschko-Ibragimov show back in February..

Duddy kept his unbeaten, now 24-0(17) record, but he took way too many shots from Smitchet, was badly busted up as a result and quite spectacularly eliminated himself - for the time being, at least - from the Pavlik sweepstakes. Duddy was, it must be said, somewhat exposed. Showing hardly any effective defence all night, the Irishman was to suffer horrendous cuts around his eyes. Suddenly the 28-year-old was passed over by Welshman Gary Lockett when it came to who would box "The Ghost" next. The question is, has Duddy's marketability been irreparably harmed since his way tougher than expected fight with Smichet?

In some ways the fact that Duddy has been forced to wait until he challenges for a world title is a blessing. The way he was so easily hit by Smichet made it quite clear Duddy would have been all but certainly blown away by the lethal hitting Pavlik had he fought him while showing the same lack of attention towards avoiding punches. Now at least Duddy has the time to learn as much as he can with a few more fights. Then, if he has mastered the art of head movement at least a little, the 28-year-old just might have a shot against a guy like Pavlik.

Very exciting, yet also vulnerable, Duddy's fans will still pay to see him fight. As such, no, his marketability may not have taken such a beating. Massively popular, the tough Irishman will still sell tickets. But whether or not any of the purists among boxing's experts would give him much of a chance against the elite of the middleweight division is another question entirely. What Duddy needs now is a number of confidence boosting and, if possible, spectacular looking wins. He needs to make fans forget about the way he looked in the Smichet fight and get people talking about him as a genuine contender.

First up in this rehabilitation, as it were, is the 28-year-old's next fight. Boxing the 33-year-old Charles Howe, a guy who was stopped in one round by Joey Gilbert in his last fight, Duddy should have no trouble getting himself back on an impressive winning track. Hopefully, if the fight lasts that long, Duddy will also be in a position to be able to show off a few newly acquired defensive moves.

Otherwise, if he continues with his exciting yet risky fighting style, John Duddy's chances at even giving a credible effort in a world title fight will be severely compromised.

well all im going to say is regardless of ability at leaast John goes out there and trys to entertain those who pay to see him. He takes blows to land blows so fans are entertained, critisce that if youse want, but your hero Mayweather could take a lesson from John about the importance of the Fans.

i didnt mean you Wicked. More a comment in general. Cotto goes out and gives his all for his fans i really believe that, however there is way to many boxers out there that take their fans for granted and alot of them couldnt give a **** about their fans, mayweather is principle offender. I not a hatton nuthugger, nor Andy Lee lover, but John Duddy is my favourite man.He may not be the most talented, he is better than what any you guys in the states have seen, he just doesnt use his defence cos he wants to entertain fans, do i like that he does this, No certainly not cos i feel he could shut alot of you over there up with his ability, however do i like Big John all the more for the fact he does it for the fans, hell yeah.

Its a different mentallity in the States and Europe, the fans have a different connection with their fans in Europe i believe, not slating US fighters, far from it, but i really believe there is a difference between fans and fighters, it stems from soccer and carried through to boxing.

I can only go by what I see from Duddy. And what I seen so far is not that impressive. You can say he's better than he's shown. But that doesn't matter. Cuz that's just talk. He has to show it.

He has'nt impressed me at all plus name some top fighters he has beat?
His record reflects his opponents all garbage.

Only name on his record is an old Yory Boy Campas. And he only won that cuz the judges were blind.
Duddy will probably go life and death with whatever bum he fights.
G
your right he should just hit and run.
Nobody wants him to hit and run. How about a bit of head movement? Some use of the jab? Abit of defense maybe? It would be nice if he boxed for awhile instead of going to war like an idiot.

ive never denied that and as ive said before his biggest failing is he wants to entertain the fans. Personally as good a trainer as Don Turner is, i just dont feel that combo worked, hopefully we will see a better John Duddy in his next fight.

To write him off as garbage is nonsense imo.AND YES I AM BIASED, hes the best Irish Fighter out there at the moment:laugh::laugh::laugh:
