"Merciless" Ray Mercer = Underrated Boxer

I always thought of "Mercilles" Ray Mercer... winner of The Gold Medal in the Heavyweight Division at the Seoul Summer Olympics in 1988... was very underrated and deserved a whole lot more credit than he was given. A former WBO World Heavyweight Champion... he was an underrated puncher and a latecomer to the Pros at the age of 27... almost 28. He was the first man to beat Tommy "The Duke" Morrison... and in my opinion... he beat Lennox Lewis in there controversial 10 Round Bout in 1996 (I think it was 1996)! I also thought that he has one of Heavyweight Boxing's greatest nicknames... "MERCILESS"... it pays to have such a sweet sirname! Anyways... what do you think of him???

i put him in the same category as tubs, ruddock and berbik. good but not great.
He was good for a crappy division, but as Tommygunn said, not great. Something is wrong when a 42 beats you into the ground from a corner when you are in your prime.
I dont think he fought in a "crappy" division. I think Mercer was abit of an underachiever. Kinda lazy shoulda trained better.
He had a rock solid chin & was a tough guy.. He was good for his era but not a top 5 guy.

I guess thats more accurate than how I stated it. I was a little harsh when I said "a crapy division", I should have said an underacheiving division.

Bill I think the division/era was fine. Mercer was the underachiever.

He fought in an era that saw Bowe, Holyfield, Lewis & Tyson pretty much in their primes. Tyson the only one maybe not in their prime.

The 90's where a good heavyweight era.

But, none of them are great by all time heavyweight standards, except for maybe Lewis he is a top 15 heavyweight, around 11 or 12.

Well maybe not Bowe but the other 3 are pretty good all time heavyweights.

Tyson was in jail for 2 years of it, which took away from his performence a lot. Mercer lost to a controversial decsion to Lewis, and Holyfield schooled him.
