He was good for a crappy division, but as Tommygunn said, not great. Something is wrong when a 42 beats you into the ground from a corner when you are in your prime.

I dont think he fought in a "crappy" division. I think Mercer was abit of an underachiever. Kinda lazy shoulda trained better.
He had a rock solid chin & was a tough guy.. He was good for his era but not a top 5 guy.
I guess thats more accurate than how I stated it. I was a little harsh when I said "a crapy division", I should have said an underacheiving division.

Bill I think the division/era was fine. Mercer was the underachiever.

He fought in an era that saw Bowe, Holyfield, Lewis & Tyson pretty much in their primes. Tyson the only one maybe not in their prime.

The 90's where a good heavyweight era.
But, none of them are great by all time heavyweight standards, except for maybe Lewis he is a top 15 heavyweight, around 11 or 12.

Well maybe not Bowe but the other 3 are pretty good all time heavyweights.
Tyson was in jail for 2 years of it, which took away from his performence a lot. Mercer lost to a controversial decsion to Lewis, and Holyfield schooled him.
