I am going to be purchasing a heavy bag, speed bag, and boxing glove(s). I workout 4-5 times a week and would like to incorporate the benefits of boxing into my workout. I am clueless as to what size of heavy bag to get and what gloves are needed for it and the speed bag.

I'm 120 lbs if that helps.

Also, is it necessary to tape my hands/wrists, or will the gloves provide the proper protection?

Thanks so much.

You should always use handwraps under your gloves when training. They can be purchased at many online sites as well as most sporting goods stores that sell boxing equipment. You could probably get away with a heavy bag in the 50-80lb range. I recommend vinyl or leather/synthetic leather over a canvas bag. Gloves are important because they provide the protection for your hands while training. Purchasing a good quality glove would be a good investment if you plan to train regularly. They make gloves that lace up, or that have a velcro closure(hook and loop). If you wont have someone to lace you up, than make sure you get a pair of the velcro style strap gloves. I really like the products Ringside puts out, as well as Title, but you'd also be ok with the nicer Everlast equipment as well. Try this site for good equipment:

Oh and by the way, you dont need to wear gloves when hitting the speedbag, just your handwraps. If you have small hands, which it sounds like you do, then try the "juniors" size handwraps instead of the adults. The Junior size is 2" X 120" length, the adult is 2" X 170" . If your hands are small, and you use adult wraps, it is too much material in most cases.

Just got the Ultimate Bag Gloves from Ringside, and they are really good. Good padding, and look like they will last a lifetime.
