WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev (45-0, 33 KOs) retained his title with a third round stoppage of Jameel McCline (38-6-3, 23 KOs) Saturday night at St Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland. Action was slow in round one with neither fighter landing anything of consequence. Valuex connected with a good right hand in round two and outworked McCline most of that round. McCime started to have success with combinations in in round three, but after an exchange at the end of the round, McCline fell to the deck with an apparent injury to his left knee. McCline could not continue and Valuev was declared the winner. Next on the agenda for Valuev is mandatory challenger Ruslan Chagaev.
Don't be so hard on Valuev. He has legendary stamina given his size and weight. It's not easy moving and boxing like Wladimir when you are THAT huge. Valuev just has different abilities. For instance, while Wladimir might use the left jab to box very well, Valuev uses it like a straight right hand. See him knocking down Barrett here with a left jab:
Nicolv Valuev has almost no boxing ability. He's just big that's all.
Monte Barret has more boxing ability than Valuev, but not really all that much more.
Valuev easily beat Barrett not for reasons of his boxing ability. It was only for reasons he's seven feet tall and weighs more than 300 pounds.
For reasons of the lack of talent out there today, Valuev will likely continue to stay on top for a while longer for reasons he can draw money, crowds and attention and that's what promoters like of course. That's what this business is all about making money.
Valuev will be likely be protected for a while longer from the few fighters out there who can beat him.
