Its Arturo Godoy.PrettyBoyFloyd said:Bill help me out! Who was it that was in the fight with Firpo that had around 9 knockdowns? That is one of my all time favorites.
Yep, Firpo knocked Dempsey through the ropes, and Dempsey got tangled up, so the judges helped him get up.tysonjones said:crap it was dempsey vs firpo that was one of the greatest fights i had ever seen. I cant believe i got them mixed up. Amazing. I think dempsey was knocked through the ropes, people helped him back into the ring and came back to knock firpo out i believe.
It wouldn't, they would have stopped it as soon as Dempsey went through the ropes because they are such wuss's now.PrettyBoyFloyd said:That was one of the ones I was thinking of. Damn, if that only happened nowadays.
Back then they would fight twice a month, now twice a year. Back then they were tougher. Now if someone gets headbutted or hit low, they cry and cry to the ref. Back then they would hit them back. If you got your nose broken or broke your hand during the fight, you fought on. If you were on queer street, you fought right back, if you were all bloody and couldn't see you fought on. The last guy I saw do that was Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini, and he was in the 80's. Back then it wasn't uncommon at all if you fought the same guy 7 or 8 times. They didn't even start wearing mouth gards until the 20's or 30's.tysonjones said:fighters are wuss's now? please, there have been plenty heavyweights since dempsey that would of killed him.
I can see why you would want to, but can't see why you would disagree.PrettyBoyFloyd said:As much as I want to disagree with that, I can't. 100%
Yes I use cell phones. And yes, I know its 2007, and yes, I watch the fights now. And yes I know what I'm talking about post 1960. I know a lot pre 2000.PrettyBoyFloyd said:Bill it is 2007!!! LOL. Do you even use cell phones? I can't believe you use a computer either
They complain now if they are fouled, even if its an accident. Back then if you got fouled, you did something worse back, or made sure you hit them right in the face. They didn't let the ref control the fight, they made sure they did.tysonjones said:good post bill but it still doesnt mean those old fighters would be modern day fights, i just dont think it would happen. YOU SAY THE GUYS ARE tougher becaue they didnt use mouth guards and fight the same guys over and over. i bet some fighters down aday wish they didnt use mouth guards and fought the same guy over and over. Hell i wish i could and i hate my mouthpiece.
Not if they lose twice in a row, after that they duck the person. Also, if the 2 fights were great fights I would pay to see it, and I'm sure many others would too.PrettyBoyFloyd said:Right back when boxing was FREE. Nobody wants to watch someone get beat twice in a row and then pay to see a third fight. I'm pretty sure when someone loses and they get a rematch they try to win still today.
If it was "sooooooooooooooooo much lower" then why is today known as the worst division yet? And why do soooooooooo many guys now-a-days try to copy their styles from back then, just they screw it up?PrettyBoyFloyd said:If you get beat by the same guy twice (TODAY!!!!!) then you clearly don't have what it takes. Back then the skill level was soooooooooooooo much lower that you always had a shot.
Watch Robinson-Baslio, Zale-Graziano, Hearns-Hagler, Tunney-Dempsey, Pep-Saddler, Holmes-Norton, Ali-Frazier. I can come up with more.tysonjones said:you obvioulsy havent seen hatton/tszyu , lol talk about coming back with something WORSE!!!
Willie Pep. If he didn't want you to hit him, and he focused 100% on not getting hit, you weren't gonna hit him.LeedsLad said:Id love to fighters fight every three months. Would be pretty awesome.
Go out on a limb then guys, whos the best P4P fighter of all-time? I dont have a great knowledge of boxers in history, but would like to watch more fights from the past. Who you guys think?
Pep is very underrated. You won't find much of him in his prime though, most of it is post plane crash.LeedsLad said:Pep is someone i havent heard mentioned much on this topic. Is he very underrated? Il try catch some videos of his fights see what i think. SRR is a guy who gets mentioned alot, would he be up there with you too?
How do think guys coming to the end now such as Hop, Winky, DLH, Mosley will rank in comparison to the very best?
Sam Peter, De La Hoya and I used to like Corrales, but..well you know, he got killed so I can't really say him anymore.PrettyBoyFloyd said:Who do you like that fights now, in 2007?
