Rocky Marciano vs. Larry Holmes

I recently thought to myself what would Bill say about this match, one going between two of his favorite fighters. Honestly I do not know which one of the two that Bill will pick.

Honestly this is how I see the match going:

Holmes UD12 Marciano
Marciano TKO14 Holmes

Marciano close ud over 15. Holmes controls the early rounds, but Marciano's relentlessness and hard body blows wear Holmes down. Holmes takes some damage when he stops and goes into his exchange mode where he stands there slugging it out for about 30 seconds. Rocky destroys Holmes in the exchanges so Larry starts to circle him and keep the jab in Rocky's face. Larry hits him with everything he has and then some and still can't seem to dent the Rock's chin. Larry withstands Marciano's attacks but he doesn't do enough to keep his lead and loses 2/3 times.
I honestly thought that you would pick Holmes in this one. Well I geuss you have faith in the majestic power of Marciano then ;). To me Marciano = GOAT
Holmes by decision prime versus prime. Any version of Marciano takes out the post Michael Spinks version of The Easton Assassin.
I doubt that Larry Holmes had that good of a chin to go the distance with Rocky Marciano. Don't try to say that Holmes would run from him, you CANNOT escape from Rocky Marciano.

Holmes would win either by a UD or a late round TKO. If a prime Holmes can take Shavers punch, he would easily take Rocky's. Holmes was only stopped once in his career and that was when he was way past his prime against Tyson.

Larry would be too big for Rocky.

I think Rocky's strength and volume would break Larry down a bit.

Besides Louis, who was way past his prime, Rocky never fought a top 10 contender that was close to Holmes's size. In fact he never fought a top 10 contender that was over 6' and weighed over 200 pounds besides Louis.

If Rocky was boxing today, he would be a small cruiserweight.
He fought a man named Carmine Vingo, who was in between 6'4 and 6'6. he nearly killed him. Vingo would have been a top contender if Rocky Had not fought him.

I was waiting for someone to bring him up.

Vingo was not a top 10 contender. He was 16-1-0 when he fought Rocky. In his last 7 bouts before he fought Rocky he had only 1 KO, and that was against a boxer that was making his pro debut.

Also, before he fought Rocky, he never fought a bout that was scheduled for more then 6 rounds. AND he was just 2 days passed his 20th birthday.

Good Prospect, BUT far from a contender.
i said that Vingo would have been a top contender if Rocky had not fought him. But, yeah, he never was a top contender. But it shows that he can fight bigger guys and win.

BUT again, how good was Vingo when Rocky fought him. He fought just 2 boxers that had more then 8 wins up to the time he fought Rocky.
I would have to say that he was pretty good. Marciano said that his two toughest fights were Charles II and the fight with Vingo. It's too bad there are no videos out on Vingo. There is a video out with Vingo vr. Marciano but it's bad quality and short.

Just look at his record and who he fought.
that doesn't nesasarrily say how good he is.
Old Larry looked good against Tyson at his best while it lasted. I see Tyson as a bigger, stronger, faster, and harder hitting marciano/frazier hybrid. So prime Larry definitely wins a decision, but the judges could easily rob him. Prolly be a SD for Holmes to be honest.

Edit: why was the poll closed?

I just don't go by ones record, if I did Rocky would be #1.

Its who you fought and beat that is more important, and Vingo didn't fight anyone that good.

Just look at some of the boxers,

George Washington went the distance with Vingo and he was stopped 17 times and ended his career with a 11-31 record.

Freddie McManus went the distance with Vingo and was stopped 8 times and ended his career with a record of 7-17-1.

You can not go by what would have been, you have to go by what was.
Larry was waaay out of shape in that fight.

the poll had a 30 day limit.

He was out of shape cuz he was washed up :p He looked good nonetheless. Years later he proved he could still hang going the distance with Holyfield. Marciano never let us see him past his prime, he only had an 8 year career with 80% of his fights sub elite level standard. It's almost like it was intentional so people would rate him higher than he deserved. It would appear to have worked. Him being White I'm sure has nothing to do with it...
White people never got treated speacial ;) Marciano had to retire because he really screwed up his back. It is too bad that he never had that comeback fight with Ingemar Johansson.
