the Erik Morales story
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's the story, I live in Chula Vista, CA. That's about 5 or 6 minutes away from the international border. Chula Vista is right next to San Diego. Kinda like someone from New York living in Manhatten, or the Bronx, get it? Anyways, i have a cousin who has been trying to get into the music biz for about 10 years now. He sings spanish songs. He has been singing locally in different clubs in Tijuana Mex.(were Erik is from) for some time now. One night, a promoter heres him sing and likes what he hears. After the show he approaches my cousin and tells him he would like to help him. We become very good friends with the promoter. It turns out that this promoter knows pretty much anyone who is anyone in the music biz including other celebrities not in the business. One day, we were at his home in Tijuana having a few beers when guess who drives up. Yep. Erik himself. Well as you can just imagine I practically fell of the chair I was sitting on!!!! Erik came to hear my cousin sing him a few songs because he wanted to back up my cousin financially. Erik at the time was looking to invest money in an up and coming new singer and the promoter had told him about my cousin.ked what he heard and since I was there, he befriended my cousin and me!! All of this happened in 2000. Fast forward to December 2004, Erik had just lost to Barrera in their 3rd and final fight in November, and would soon start getting ready to fight Pacquiao in March of '05. I had gone to his gym in Tijuana to drop off some of my cousins cd's. I had time to spare so I started sparring with Erik's brother. Little did I know that Erik was watching from his office. When we were done, Erik came out and asked if I would be interested in going up to where he trains for his fights at the Otomi Training center up in the mountains in the state of Mexico, to be part of his sparring team!!!!! Can you guys believe this ****!!! And the rest is, shall we say, history. I sparred with him for his two fights with Pac man, not the last two, like i mentioned before on a post. I was set to sparr with him for the 3rd fight but i tore my achillis tendon in Feb. of 06. If any of you have the last fight, my cousin is the guy who sang during Erik's entrance to the ring. You could see him on a few shots. I've learned alot about the sport ever since I got to now Erik. It's sad to say but some fights are fixed, and no boxer is immune to not selling himself, including Erik. Interesting side note: right before Erik's final fight against Pac man, we were with him in the locker room seeing him get ready. He was ready to go. He trained like he never had before, went to a nutrition center in Los Angeles before he even started training for that fight, i mean, he was ready. Anyways, about an hour before he was to make his way to the ring, Golden Boy Promotion's VP, Schaeffer I believe his name is, walked into the locker room and asked to speak to Erik alone. We all went outside. Half hour later, he comes out and leaves. We all go inside and asked Erik what was up. He says nothing. After that visit, Erik was a totally different person. No longer was he pumped up and ready to fight. He had turned off the music he had and kept to himself. Well, the fight starts, and you all now the outcome. Erik has never admitted to us anything, out of shame i guess, but we all now what happened in that locker room. And that my friends, is the truth.
