Tommy Morrison Accepts Chuck Liddell's Challenge and Will Make His MMA Debut!

May 10, 2007 - Tommy "The Duke" Morrison, one of the most intriguing boxers to even step into the squared circle, shocked the MMA world this week by announcing his intention to fight 340 lb. John Stover, an experienced cagefighter with 8 professional fights, on June 9, 2007 at the Cliff Castle Casino (Cliff Castle Casino) in Arizona in Gino Carlucci's World Fighting Championship (www.thewfc.com).

Morrison's bombshell announcement comes over a decade after his previous bombshell announcement that rocked the boxing world that he had tested positive for AIDS. Morrison, however, has been symptom free for 10 years now and claims that he was the victim of a false positive test result. He recently started boxing again and was cleared to return to the ring by the West Virginia Athletic Commission after passing a battery of medical tests in Arizona, the results of which were forwarded to West Virginia.

Best known to the general public for his role as Tommy Gunn in Rocky V, Morrison was on top of the boxing world before a single test result in 1996 took it all away. But Morrison (46-3-1, 40 KOs) was no celluloid tiger and was a significant fighter and box office draw. George Foreman, for example, lost to only five fighters in his career and Morrison is one. Morrison also held a share of the heavyweight title on two occasions.

"I had just signed a three-fight deal with Don King," Morrison recalls, "that was going to lead to showdown with Mike Tyson that was worth $38 million. My first fight was against Stormy Weathers in Las Vegas, but then came the test result and the fight was cancelled. I estimate that cost me around $100 million in fight purses over the past 10 years."

Morrison was spurred to start cagefighting by an interview that Chuck Liddell gave on Good Morning Texas where Liddell called out Morrison and said he wanted to fight him. "I couldn't believe that," Morrison says. "It's one thing to talk about fighting someone but another thing to actually do it. Let's see if Chuck Liddell's heart is as big as his mouth. He is crazy to want to get into the cage with me. I beat George Foreman. Nobody in the history of boxing hit harder than George Foreman. So why would I be afraid to get hit by Chuck Liddell? He should be the one to be afraid. Liddell has never been hit by anyone like me. Dana White always talks about how a top cagefighter like Liddell could beat a top boxer so here's a chance to make it happen. I want to know if Liddell and Dana White really mean what they say or if they are just full of talk. I will take on Chuck Liddell anytime, anyplace, anywhere."

Morrison's first step in his mixed martial arts career will be followed and reported on around the world and "The Duke" is dead serious about his upcoming fight. "I'm really excited to be fighting in the WFC and I feel like a whole new world has been opened up to me. If you want to see the future of mixed martial arts then come to the Cliff Castle Casino in Camp Verde Arizona on June 9, 2007...because that future is me."

How would you like to get in there with a bloodied up Tommy Morrison?

Liddell in my view will have the advantage seeing as Morrison is fighting in Chucks world but Morrison still has a very good chance.

Not many people out srike chuck and he does alot of punching but if he doesnt change that style against Morrison he will be killed so he will have to fight with more leg kicks, takedowns and may have to do what he hasnt done in a long time...wrestle.

Chuck might be lethal in MMA and alot of pro MMA guys could beat pro boxers in MMA but Chuck likes to stand toe to toe and thats the one thing most MMA fighters couldn't do with a boxer and Morrison has lethal hands aswell.

from what ive heard liddel aint even a ground fighter, he's ment to be very average on the ground, his main strengh is his take down defence.

i watched his second fight with tito and he was reluctant to fight on the ground and wanted to stand at all times.

im not educated on MMA though so what do i know. ;)

Lidell is an accomplished wrestler was the captain of his college wrestling team and actually has a better amateur wrestling record than Ortiz.

What he has done so sucessfully is use his wrestling to avoid being taken down or if being taken down he uses it to stand back up, which means that wrestling based fighters like Ortiz and Couture are screwed.

If US Olympic Alternate and current UFC heavy weight champion can't take down and pound Lidell morrison has no chance for that.

However I think this is all moot as Morrison hasn't ever passed an independent blood test and MMA is a lot bloodier than boxing (by that I mean if someone is bleeding and on top of you their blood can get in your eyes and mouth.

So no way this fight ever happens.

Now Toney vs Chuck

That would be a great fight.

Guys he isn't fighting Chuck yet. He's fighting a fat guy first and MAY get a shot at chuck. I want Morrison to get beat up because I flat out can't stand him. He said he would KO Marciano. Two thumbs down to him.

I dont know what Tommy's curret wieght is right now, but i belive it said the other guy he was fighting is 340lbs. If thats true this would be a freak show match. If he is commited to make it in MMA then he is not off to a very good start. i wouldnt even give him the dame chance as some other pro boxers stepping into the cage. He wont really be a "Pure" boxer when he steps in as he will be training MMA. Love MMA or hate MMA Chuck is the best 205 pound MMA fighter in the world. Tommy would need lots of training to take Chuck. He would first need to learn to strike, and not box.

Cliff Castle is in my neck of the woods and I'm going to try to make this fight. If the guy has good takedown then Tommy might be in for a long night. If I go, I'll let everyone know how it goes down.

OK from what I have found out Morrison is fighting a bum on some Indian reserve in Arizona and they don't test for HIV

Like in his last fight

Also he does have aids and is on the Magic Johnson cocktail that reduces it to almost undetectable amounts which is great but he still has it.

So he's never going to fight Chuck or anyone good in a regulated and sanctioned MMA match.
