Former undisputed junior middleweight champion Winky Wright was set to end a 17-month layoff on Dec. 4, but now he'll have to wait a bit longer to return to the ring.

Wright suffered an injury to his left hand sparring several days ago, forcing him to withdraw from a Versus-televised main event against Michi Munoz in Snoqualmie, Wash., Golden Boy Promotions executive David Itskowitch told ESPN.com on Monday night.

The card has been canceled, Itskowitch said.
"He injured his left hand near the base of the hand near his wrist," Itskowitch said. "He hit someone on top of the head while he was sparring and the hand started swelling up. He had an MRI but I was told he has a 33 percent decrease of strength in his hand."

After the injury happened, Wright thought he might still be able to fight by resting the hand for a few days, Itskowitch said. However, on Monday Wright saw a hand specialist, who told him he could not fight next month, Itskowitch said.

Unwilling to accept various fight offers because he was not satisfied with the purse offers, Wright (51-4-1, 25 KOs) hasn't fought since losing a decision to Bernard Hopkins in a 170-pound fight in July 2007. But Wright grew restless and wanted to fight, so he took a lower-profile fight against Munoz (21-2, 14 KOs).

They were scheduled to meet at a contract weight of 164 pounds as Wright worked his way down to the 160-pound middleweight division, where he was a top contender after vacating the junior middleweight world championship.

The plan had been for Wright to shake off the ring rust from the long layoff against Munoz and then move on to a bigger fight on HBO in the first quarter of 2009. With the injury, it is unclear what his schedule will look like.

The Dec. 4 co-feature was slated to be super middleweight prospect Daniel Jacobs against Victor Lares in an eight-rounder. That fight may move to Dec. 6 and open the Oscar De La Hoya-Manny Pacquiao HBO PPV telecast at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Tough break for Wink. I was really looking forward to seeing him back in the fold.

Not good for Winky. I hope he doesn't retire or take another year off in result of this.

Well, it's not like we lost a great fight here, Michi Munoz was going to be a walk in the park even for an inactive Wright. I don't have much sympathy for Winky, who waited until he was on the Side of a Milk Carton before getting back to business.

Me neither, the guy brought it upon himself with his own stupid, delusional decisions. But it sucks because the Munoz fight was going to be on Versus and it's unusual to see a P4P fighter fighting basic cable, even in a mismatch. That was the best thing about it.

For those that think he won't be fighting on HBO now, are wrong. Winky got a lock on an HBO date off a technicality so he'll still have a date most likely in the Spring.

Sucks! I miss Winky and I definitely hope to see him again. I know he can beat Abraham, and I want to see him do it.

That about does it for me with Winky. I give up, I never was a huge fan but I respected his skills. At this point he might as well retire because even his own fans are starting to not give a crap anymore.

Well I still think he's got it and I'm willing to wait to see him return. I still think he's got another clinic to hand out to Abraham or Pavlik.

Chances are if he ever fights again he'll have been out for almost 2 years, You dont put on clinics against top notch opponents after coming off a 2 year lay off.

I agree in the sense you dont put on a clinic against a top notch opponent after a two year layoff. But I also think that Winky needs only a tuneup fight to get himself back and ready, then I can see him beating a top level opponent. He's still P4P material IMO.

We'll see, by now he may have fell off a cliff. Its been almost 2 years, and he showed signs of age in his last fight.
But his last fight was at 170 and he wasn't comfortable. But like you said, we'll see. He may be shot and finished, we'll see and I hope not because I still think he can pull it off P4P.

I'm a Winky fan but I gotta to go with TysonJones on this one. You can't win big time fights when you're a part time fighter. He looked less than stellar in his last fight and while he defiantely was way out his element at 170, there's a big difference between Munoz and Abraham or Pavlik. If Wink gets in the ring with either of those guys after a 2 year layoff it's lights out.

Yeah he has a date but HBO won't let him fight a nobody so either it's a freebie or a double header or it's not on HBO.
