Whey will not make you put on weight unless you are lifting weights. When I started intense training I was about 190. The only muscle work I did was using body weight (pull up, push ups, core work). I got down to about 168 and was pretty cut. Intake a ton of protein because as long as you aren't lifting weights (which slow speed anyways, you are training slow muscle fiber) you won't put on weight.
